I just saw an old train steam engine, and even on that, the rivets were very small. If I'd have to guess, they would be half a centimeter tall on a 6-meters long engine plus tender. On the other side, the nuts and bolts used to secure the bell were very proeminent indeed.
And planes were quite a bit more streamlined than a 20-miles per hour train engine, so I'd assume on a plane they would be much less visible (flush heads on the outside and so on).

But this thread is very interesting, and I've learned things not directly connected to the plane nonetheless. And I can't wait for the simple model I've voted for

That is a really interesting method of doing the petals. If you rubbed the center with a ball eating, you would have a near perfect dome! This is probably the best petal method I have seen yet!

Aircraft Gunnery_Top Turret

I hate people like me. You need to check the profile on your top turret. Perhaps spencer can confirm that it's a Martin top turret. They were pretty common.

If he can send some pics and a some basic measurements, I can make a master to create vacformed canopies.

Yeah, just like that. I need the diameter and height. I can fudge the rest.

BTW, Zathros, how do you get the images to post so large?

Use the little yellow box on the posting tool bar, you copy and paste (right click view image, the copy and paste) the URL of the photo into the box, you're not uploading it as an image that way, and you get great big pictures to show up like this.

So, the turret profile isn't too far off since the Martin turret was pretty flat on top... just need to allow for a more "square" radius on the down-turning part. Less a 'dome' and more a 'push-button' shape.

Looking really good so far, MD!

Yeah, you're really close, you could probably squeeze the one you have into shape!

Okay so I did another generation based on the comments I read, This is a fully articulated gun carriage, I plan on cutting a hole in the rear top of the fuselage to match this so it will rotate. The vac form canopy was a quickie, I did this by cutting a hole the proper diameter in a piece of balsa, then double faced taped a piece of blister packing that I salvaged from who knows what. Put the balsa on top of the shop vac hose and turned it on. Took heat gun and applied heat, slowly... then pressed the shape I wanted as the vacuum sucked the heated plastic into a perfect sphere. The whole operation took about 30 minutes, most of the time was spent locating all the stuff. . Got it on the first try, Then took a #80 drill bit and chucked it into a dremel and used it free hand to follow the lines I drew on dome with fine tip sharpie. Steady hands help here.
Anyway this is the result. At the end I posted a video of the gun rotating so you could see the articulation
