I got the canopy pieces from a Hasagawa 1/32 scale Bf 109 kit. Note that only the windshield is used since the Avia never used the birdcage canopy. However Squadron mail order has the Erla version which fits this kit with a bit of trimming
Just in case you are going to use the Hasegawa windshield, there are two of them in the plastic kit so you still have a complete kit. I just used one from a friend.

The windshield also needed trimming to fit in the paper model, but the results were good.

More details soon

Wink Fuselage extras

Added detail

Fuselage has two side gun blisters and the gun troughs on top. In addition there are a couple of small blisters on the lower engine cowl.

The engine exhausts are easy to build and are glued in place. There is a top flat plate above the exhaust stacks like all the 109s.

Hold off finishing the nosepiece until you get the spinner and prop finished. I do this to prevent damage while assembling the rest of the plane.

Having fun

Cool Tail surfaces

I elected to have a separate rudder and elevator surfaces. The kit allows for both options. I added two small wire pins so they can be positioned in place and glued when ready. The rudder has a small part ( the mass balance ) and that requires a cutout ( later on ) in the vertical fin.

I reinforced the tail with two small toothpick pins. Not really needed, but mine got loose.

Good work. It was certainly a very interesting-looking aircraft with the bulges and intakes.

Thank you for the information on the canopy. I repeat Don's comments on the bulges and intakes. Great techniques on the control surfaces. I'm looking forward to your next installment on this thread.

Cool Wings

Wings

Build the frames for the left, right and center. Once done, dry fit but do not glue them yet to each other.

Again I elected for separate ailerons, so I cut them out. The kit offers both options. Next cut out and assemble the landing gear bay to the lower skin.
IAF Avia S-199 by Modelarz Kartonowy in 1/33 scale-dscf6133.jpgIAF Avia S-199 by Modelarz Kartonowy in 1/33 scale-dscf6135.jpg

Glue each of the lower skin to the ribs/frame and then wrap each wing skin on the top of the ribs to match the trailing edge.( the wings are one piece top and bottom ) . I cut out the ailerons, but used a low tack tape to put them back in place for the purpose of gluing the wing to the frame. Once dry, I removed the taped aileron pieces. They will be replaced with the separate ailerons.

Do the other wings next.
Now that the wings are dry, align and glue to the center frame matching the ribs. Make sure you have the proper dihedral ( look at the 3 view ). I set small blocks on the wing tips to set it overnight.

When the wing assembly is done, I glued the center wing lower skin. I then fit the entire wing assembly to the fuselage slots and center it. When glued it provides a strong structure. You can fit the wing to fuselage fillets next.

There are the upper wing blisters and the lower radiators to be added. All are easy to assemble.

Note:
You may want to consider separating the flaps, radiator flaps and leading edge slats on the wing. That is alot of work and in my opinion adds little to the lines of this model and I elected not to. I have seen it with everything dropped on the Polish forum.

Cheers

Wing guns

The Avia, like the late Me-109 G and K versions carried the wing canons in external gondolas. Small frames are glued to the wings and the skins are then fitted starting with the center sections. I used round tooth pics painted black for the guns. It would be better to get small metal tubes instead ( I may replace them at a future time ( or not ). More pics later as well.

The radiators fit flush to the bottom as shown

Landing gear

The main struts are large paperclips straightened and bent at the lower tip to act as the wheel axles. I glue the strut part to the clip and when dry, roll it as instructed. The struts fit nicely in the wing inner rib cutout. I used super glue to attach them in place ( for strength mainly ). Make sure you get the alignment correctly. Too often I see Me-109s and spitfires with stupid looking struts that are either vertical or too far apart.

The main wheels are card stock glued to each other and sanded to shape. That was easy since I purchased the GPM laser cut frames and it included the wheels too. I tried it and it came out OK. Wheels are painted flat rubber black in 3 coats so it soaks in. pics of the wheels later.

The tails wheel is simple and straight forward.

Thumbs up Canopy and windshield

I decided to use the windshield from a Hasegawa plastic kit of an Me-109 in 1/32 scale. It needs to be trimmed to fit the fuselage. The plastic kit cutout is different, but the mod is minor.

The side-swinging canopy of the Avia S-199 is the same as the Me-109K ( the last variant of the 109 ) and were called Erla style. The frame was much less visible and only 2 length wise members on top. I looked at the Squadron web site and they carried an Erla canopy in 1/32 scale. I expected it to come with the windshield, but it did not have that ( however, they had 2 vacuformed canopies ). The fit was good and needed only slight trimming. Note that 1/32 scale is bigger than the kit 1/33 scale. For those that want to, you can use the kit instruction to make the canopies as well.
