One of my favorite stories regarding the F-15 happened during Red Flag 85-01. I was covering the Nevada war games for our base newspaper at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. Half the then 21st Tactical Fighter Wing (now 3rd Wing) had deployed to Nellis AFB for the fun. I went along as "war correspondent." Most Red Flags involved different aircraft from different services, and from different countries.

<snip>
At a nearby table, four Marine pilots who were at 85-01 with their beloved F-18s, balked at what the AF major saying and bit of a heated discussion of the best aircraft and pilots ensued. It ended with a challenge. Four F-18s versus one F-15. The rules were simple. The F-18s will take off in the morning run. They will be allowed to set up however they liked. The major would take off 20 minutes later. Survivors return when the enemy is dead.

<snip>
The first to land was the pilot who got the final kill. I will never forget the grin on the face of that Air Force major as he taxied to his parking spot. When he saw me, he gave me a thumbs up, then pumped his arm.

Needless to say, four Marine pilots were buying the drinks that night.

I also seem to recall reading about a training exercise where the aggressors were civilian contractees in Canadair Sabres, brought in to provide some non-standard tactics and profiles.

For the first 2 days they dished out hubris in heaping helpings to the F-15 jocks until the Eagle pilots learned not to engage them low slow and dirty. The F-15 has the performance to break off combat at will, but will have it's butt handed to it by a Sabre if the pilot loses initiative and gets into a fur-ball on the other guys terms.

Lesson eventually learned and training successful, but I'm sure the beer was flowing one way for a while<G>

Just the cockpit looks like a whole complete model there!

Very clean and organized construction.

That's a great build you have going. I have a GPM A-6E whose construction stalled about 75% of the way through the cockpit. Just my usual case of gorilla fist vs. fiddly bits. It looks like you have thing well under control!

Nice cockpit! Seems its just a bit lighter in color than I remember, but that could also be color variations from the camera to the screen and all.

Oddly enough, as I sit here typing this, I am listening two F-15 Eagles shoot touch-n-goes at the local airport.

How do I know they are Eagles, you wonder? I KNOW the sound of those engines 8v) A quick look just now out the window confirms it 8v)

Boy do I love that aircraft.

Can't wait to see the finished E model photos.

Very nice start Jorg. I have this model on my very long list of airplanes to build

I worked with F-15Es in 555 FS (famous Triple Nickle) then 550 FS and then 425 FS at Luke AFB, for two years until they were transferred out to SJ and DM. I had this very jet in my squadron. I would have put it together long time ago if it only had LF and not SJ on its tail...
