I use 1/8" clear plastic rod from Plastruct® or Evergreen®. Either put a small (inconspicuous) hole in the bottom of the fuselage and a rolled paper tube (like a socket) attached to internal formers, or use clear plastic strips (from packaging) to make small cradles on the ends of two or three clear rods that are mounted on a solid base. (With luck, the model will sit on the cradles without being glued down.)
For bases, I use whatever is handy: scrap 2mm card, wood blocks, craft bases from Hobby Lobby. I used the same rod (1/8") to prop up the tail of my GPM Orion. I had packed the nose with lead weights and that stinker still sat on its tail! The clear rod fixed that.
