The center and rear fuselage skins

The center and rear fuselage skins

I started with the rear most part 7 which is a cone. The I rounded part 6 and glued along the lower tab. However, the two parts are so off in that it is not possible to assemble unless you modify one of them. I elected to cut the lower part of 6 so they can fit to part 7. In hindsight, I should have added a piece to lower part 7 to match part 6. I then glued part 5 which is the upper fuselage center section skin to part 6. The reason for it is that if you try to match it later, it probably will be very difficult.

Forward section to center structure

Forward section to center structure

Attach the forward section to the center structure by matching the bulkhead part 4 to the rear of the skin part 4 ( WHERE THE COCKPIT IS LOCATED ). Match the lower and sides . The upper portion will not match, but that is the rear of the cockpit and is OK for later work.

Let it dry

Front and rear attachment

You need to dry fit the assemblies first. There is a need to remove some of the rear bulkhead material so it fits. A little nip and tuck.

Use the round red side circles on the rear of part 4 ( the cockpit section ) as a guide. Match to the engine bay floor as well.

Exclamation Wings

Wing structure

The wing frames are used only partially from the kit. The modification is a replacement for the center box with a plywood piece and the addition of guide card stock inside the wing frames sides.

Glue the center frame ( mine is the plywood ) thru the cutout in the fuselage center frame and center skin.
ME-1101 Super model in 1/33 scale-dscf6674.jpgME-1101 Super model in 1/33 scale-dscf6675.jpgME-1101 Super model in 1/33 scale-dscf6680.jpgME-1101 Super model in 1/33 scale-dscf6682.jpg
Glue each wing frame inside the wing. The inner rib will form the shape that mates to the fuselage. I keep the tips unglued in case of any modifications if needed ( it did not need any after work here ( good fit ).

Wings attached

The wings are then glued to the fuselage. Match on the lower surface first.

The wing fillet fits well over the wing.
ME-1101 Super model in 1/33 scale-dscf6685.jpg
Wings are attached now.
ME-1101 Super model in 1/33 scale-dscf6690.jpg

Note:
I considered removing the ailerons and flaps, but decided against it as this is not a very precise kit and the colors are not stable and may wear or deform. Also, the landing gear door appears to interfere with the flap positions, so I decided against it.

Cheers

Exclamation Tail surfaces

The tail surfaces are simple one piece folded over along the leading edge. Internal frame provides shape and rigidity.

Note that the German marking on the vertical tail right side is backwords. If this is distasful to some then make a new repainted piece.

Only comment is to please install the tail surfaces after the wings are attached and the cocpit is properly cut and put together then locate where it should be rather than use the marking on the printed kit tail. With all the adjustments, I had to relocate to keep it vertical and horizontal and perpendicular.

Smile Landing gear

Landing gear

The wheels I built are laminated card stock and I then sanded the wheels profile on my mini lathe ( you can use a Dremel tool or a hand drill as well ). Once sanded, painted it black rubber color and when dry attach the wheel hubs.
ME-1101 Super model in 1/33 scale-dscf6705.jpgME-1101 Super model in 1/33 scale-dscf6708.jpgME-1101 Super model in 1/33 scale-dscf6709.jpg
The landing gear struts are made of big paperclip core with the skins wrapped around. If built to the size shown as I did, the plane would be seating horizontal on its gear. However, most photos show it is a slight tail down. Anyhow, I like it as is.

The gear struts are then glued ( use CA glue for strength ) in place to the wood base inside the frame.

Exclamation Cockpit and canopy

Cockpit

I added the pilot seat and the belts in place, then the rudder pedals and the control column. Then, I added a small gun sight to the dashboard.

Canopy

I cut the vacuformed canopy and trimmed as needed. I then dipped it as my usual method in Future floor liquid, which gives it a very shiny finish. Once dry ( under cover to keep dust off )after 24 hours, you can glue the frame on. Since the frame is segmented, I cut the forward frame and glued it on and then the rear frame was attached. The lower frame was added on, but I had to make a new wider piece as it did not cover properly. The results were good. Glue the canopy in place.

The only items left are the engine and under belly engine cover.

Here are some status pictures of what this model looks like now.

Smile Engine

The kit comes with a simple engine should you decide to build it. I built most of it, but decided not to use it and rather scratch build my own Heinkel-Hirth He S 011 engine. There are some good photos out there of two engines. One at the USAF museum, and another at the EAA museum. In addition, there is a super built model version on one of the Polish paper model forums. This guy really went to town on the engine and must have spent hundreds of hours of detail that include internal engine components. For me it was too much and I wanted an average looking engine.

Engine casing

Since I have a small wood lathe, I decided to make my own engine casing out of a wood Dowel ( approx. 1 inch diameter will do ). After getting the rough external dimensions, I printed a template to use. Once done and checked, I sanded it for a while.

Question Under belly

You can build the engine cover that fits below and glue it on, or there is a provision for a removable version, which really does not stay on very well. I built the belly pan and will display it next to the aircraft and engine later.
