No.61 Cessna Citation CJ3, originally 1/36

Coming up is No.61, Cessna Citation CJ3, NUMA livery, originally at 1/36.
This model is built using Kodak Print paper that is laminated on ordinary 80 gsm paper to
give more strength overall. The bluish colour is very satisfying for me other than the beautiful
shape of the fuselage with engines at rear of fuselage behind the position of the wings.
The only mod is at the engine nacelle fairings where the gaps are covered with a concave
paper scrap painted in silver.

Oh, by the way, it's a free model, courtesy of Aaron Murphy.
Perhaps you can help by grabbing a couple of models from his webstore
in view of the latest July 4 promotion sales.

Aaron asked me to do a beta build of the long awaited F-111 Aardvark, which in its original scale is 1/50 (some 17-3/4 inches long, or 45 cm) but I'm reducing it to 1/72 to fit in this series (still measuring close to 13 inches in length).

The pics of the engine and nacelles will be of a great help if you would like to build this bird. But of course, you can do it your way.

Aaron has designed a simple swing wings mechanism that swing a wing at a time. I was experimenting to do a mechanical one that will hopefully move both wings at the same time but it was such an ambition that I have to shelf it for the time being as it will take a lot of time to do modifications and tests. Thoughts have also been given to the pinion gear mechanism........maybe later in a modification stage.

So I'm beta building it stock instead of mod.

The misaligned rescue arrow graphics on both sides of the fuselage will be fixed when Aaron sees them.

I'll show more build pictures along the way if I don't forget to take pics of them.

Excellent - thanks.

What paper and printer do you use? Printed parts look great.

Thanks, Gene. The paper I use is the Kodak photoprints 4x6 inches per piece. I rescale the templates into the scale that I want and cut and paste them using Photoshop on to 4x6 inches formats, 10 pieces of paper (photos) in my case, and have them printed out as photos in a print shop. The outcome is excellent, you've got the finest details that you can't get from a inkjet printer and glossy surface with a protective layer, far better than from a laser printer. The "photos" are then laminated on normal or thicker A4 paper, depending on your preference and need, before building.

Very well WIP 'til now papermate!! I tried to replicate your building technic laminating two sheets of paper but failed because the UHU glue I used not expands evenly and lumps form on the surfaces. Do you use something for thinner the glue? Can you explain this vital stage of your process building technic. Thanks, waiting for the rest of the building and best regards. Tony.

Thanks, Tony. I use PVA white glue which is water based instead of UHU for lamination. I prefer PVA glue to UHU because it's easier to spread evenly, with your mid finger, onto the back of the template. What I do is that I mark on the backing sheet (the lamination sheet) the position of the template before gluing. Use a roller to even out the glue and wait a little while, don't let it dry completely, and cut out the template leaving a reasonable margin. If it's a wing, score at least three lines along the fold on the backside of the laminated part and fold. Adjust if necessary and let it dry. If it's a round or circular fuselage part, do the same thing, to pre-form the said part. Treat the tabs in the same way to get a snug fit when joining the parts.

PVA glue won't cause the part to warp like normal paper as the photo has a very thin layer on the back (I don't know if it's ppe or what) that resists water to some extent. If you use PVA evenly, the backing (laminate) paper will stick tightly to the photo for most of the time. If it comes off when you cut out the template, apply some PVA as a touch-up remedy.

UHU glue, to me, is a bit difficult to control as it is harder to spread evenly. Moreover, it slips when folding the part as mentioned above so leaving a good margin is a wiser approach if you need to use UHU. If you wait out until it dries, folding the part will cause wrinkles on the back of the part. Sometimes it matters but sometime it doesn't, depending on how you like it.

OK, here's the latest update as per pics attached.
Here we go to have a second bite of the cherry.
The rescue arrow graphics is now fixed as a start
and some hints for the construction of the wing spar (central part)
that needs to be dealt with first before building the engines and wings.

Thanks, Tony. Just hope so when I get to the swing wings.
