Cool Focke Wulf Ta-183 Huckebein in 1/33 scale Quest

So I am on the Luft 46 kick and getting ready for my next build.

So far, I have completed the Mistel 5, Benz project F, Lippisch P13, Me-1101, B&V P210 all in 1/33 scale ( My favorite for aircraft ). I have also a Sombold and an Me-329 waiting as well.

So this build is for the Ta-183 from Quest. Kit number is 027 dated January 2007.

First impression is that it is a medium complexity kit that is printed on good paper. The parts appear crisp, but we will see. The paper format is larger than A4 or letter ( almost Legal size ).

My kit has two fuselage and tail options. One is a white under side and the other a silver metallic under which I think I will build.

Here are some pics of the kit cover and parts.

Also, this is not the first or last log regarding this kit. I found one on the German Kartonbau site which is detailed.

Cheers

I'm really looking forward to this one. If it is even half as good as your 210 this will be quite the treat.

Thumbs up Some aircraft info

The Focke-Wulf Ta 183 Huckebein is probably the best know and the most modeled Luft 46 aircraft. The basic design morphed into some famous and some not so famous aircraft. The basic layout was adopted by the soviets almost directly in the form of the LA-15 and influenced the Mig-15. In a lesser known form, Kurt Tank and some former aero engineers from Germany sold their services to Argentina and built the Pulqui II

. There were some refinement to the Pulqui II, but at the end, this aircraft never made it past the prototype phase and along with Evita Peron, became a museum piece.

One feature that was on the Ta 183, was the T tail. You can still see T tails on the C-5 Galaxy and the Antonov An-76 as well as some other 60's vintage planes.

For reference I used the book Luftwaffe Secret projects, Fighters.
Nice info and sketches.

Also, lots of info on the Luft 46 web site:

Focke-Wulf Ta 183 Luft '46 entry

Notes before building.
The aircraft is very short coupled and you need a fair amount of weight in the nose or it would be a tail seater.

Second, I note that the kit has a funky + structure in the nose with some internal bullet in the air intake. That is not possible since the engine was the Heinkel HeS 011, or Jumo 004 located aft. The engine compressor intake was axially just about half way where the main gear well is at. Also, the cockpit was above the intake. So the nose intake duct was clear cylinder all the way to the engine.

This model is a continuation of my Luft 46 in 1/33 scale. I know many people like it, but it is like the P-51 mustang , Spitfire and Zero fighters of WW 2. Everyone knows them , builds them in all sort of versions... For me, it is more interesting to build some of the other obscure concepts.

Instruction for building:
There are numerous views and sketches. However, some may not be fully clear or apparent. You need to study them as well as look for other build logs for ides and suggestions. Some parts have the same part numbers but are clearly different.

The kit relies on an internal skeletal structure which has internal cockpit, skins and sections attached to. however, this is a straight forward build for the average paper modeler.

That is all for now. Construction will be posted shortly

Cheers

Isaac

Framing

I started by building the main fuselage frame structure.

I also built the tail frame and the center wing box. I will also build the wing frames as well before I start building the body and the forward and aft sections.

Note the weights that will be inserted a bit later to make sure it is not a tail-seater.

The wings are beefy as well. I pasted the frames on card stock ( I did accommodate the card thickness ).

I am working on the cockpit as we speak. Should be interesting. Some of the parts under the pilot seat will not be visible ( so why am I building it? ).

Anyhow, having fun

Thanks

Isaac

I am glad you think this is a funky building thread.

Sometimes it is the kit, sometimes it is the subject aircraft and sometimes it is my writing.

Enjoy
