B&W Seaplane 1919 NEW from By Air Classique

We've finally got this famous aircraft designed, apart from being the first Boeing aircraft, this Seaplane brought aviation to many corners of rural early twentieth Century New Zealand.

The Seaplane F was operated by the NZ Flying School in Mission Bay, Auckland.

This started off life as a 1/144 design, and evolved, as some designs do into an accurate scale representation of this seaplane. At present we are going to use this particular model to develop some more diorama work so hopefully some more images to add to this thread.

Part of appeal of the model to us was the large exhaust manifold pipe, which was short lived, and removed by the Kiwi engineers after the wing was set on fire.

VERY cool! Seattle knows that plane well, and anyone familiar with Boeing history. Leads up to the Boeing 40 of 1928 as far as commercial aircraft go.

This aircraft is slightly different to the Replica built in the 1980's...different floats and it had a longer wingspan so quite a lot of photographic references used. Glen, we've actually designed both Boeing 40 and 80 (and Monomail!) to an advanced stage but got spooked by Boeing's policies on licensing models...so these designs have stayed on the Macs.

Seaplane Diorama in 1/72

We've never designed a water oriented diorama so this will be a new experience. We selected the 1916 designed Sea Mew because it fitted in with our time period and it was a type of boat present in New Zealand at that time (1916 - 1919).

One of the interesting things is reconciling a waterline model boat with the fact that the bottom of the hull (interior) will be visible. We considered an illustrated hull interior, but opted for a card board ribbed job. The Sea Mew's beam, at 1/72 is one inch.

We found that the boat warped as the hull dried so in future we would pin the model base to a cork board to keep things straight, although there are probably other options known to the ship model design fraternity..

The mast and boom, gaff and bowsprit were all made from a whittled down bamboo skewer...

Sorry Vallecampo I dont know what: muy buen trabajo means????

I attach a postcard we designed of the airplane. You can see where we live (Kaiwaka) on the Map. This design was also licensed as a Jigsaw Puzzle, which retailed in New Zealand.

If any of you guys make it down to New Zealand let us know...

Belated thanks gentlemen. I've got sidetracked with Postcard Design work and finishing off the the Miles Mohawk in 1/72, but should be able to get back to that diorama very shortly.
