Mitsubishi B2M1 Type 89 in 1/100 scale
Hello my friends!
Time to show my last model. Is a full scratchbuilding in 1/100 scale (used the old school methods to made a paper model without 3D software). The subject is a Mitsubishi B2M1 Type 89 Model 1, a japanese navy torpedo plane of 1930's This interesting warplane, is designed by Blackburn ( is a enlarged version of Blackburn Rippon). The T-7B or 3MR4 design is show to Mitsubishi in 1927, the japanese company buy the design and put this type in mass production. The major changes in relation to Rippon is a used for a big water cooled engine Hispano-Suiza 12LBR and the upper wing with a wingspan smaller than the lower. The B2M1 is introduced in service in 1932, but the plane is not popular in Navy because a structural weakness and frequent engine failure (because a poor quality in magnetos), beside the problems this type served until 1938 and participated in early stages of sino-japanese war. Because this type of plane, designed by foreign countries and incipience in manufacturing, Western strategists developed the belief that the Japanese had not the outbreak of World War II modern aircraft, with types able to offer qualified air opposition. What happened to Japanese industrial park from the second half of the 1930s was totally ignored by the Allies. |

Construction Method.
This project began in November last year and at intervals (some long) was developed in a year. In this forum that belongs to the local model club you guys can follow in Portuguese all developments of model design to final assembly.
CCCP • Ver Tópico - CCCP Exclusive - Confecção em Scratch do Mistubishi B2M1/2 I'll post some pictures here of some steps for you guys have an idea of the work. One of the major difficulties in modeling Japanese aircraft, especially the inter-war independent of the method used are good references. I used basically the book edited by Putnan "Blackburn Aircraft since 1910" and a drawing from the book "Bombers 1919-1939" edited by Blandford. From these plans fabricated in a plant scale 1/100. How to use the metric system, scale 1/100 each meter is 1 centimeter which facilitates measurements. I developed two parallel builds: a call from alpha to test formers and positioning panel lines and another that beta tested the final assembly. All parts were hand drawn with straightedge and French curve and then scan and were vectorized in Corel Draw, then apply a digital painting with GIMP. The two unique pieces that were designed in 3D software were the torpedo and the spinner (the shareware version of Siatki). Beside the time used I like a lot the final results. Thank's my friends! Best regards. |

Wow! That's awesome! I've wanted to develop a kit of this one for a long time, but good references are hard to find. What a pretty airplane, and great model. Thanks for giving us such a thorough review and post on it!
