Fokker DII from Hand Drawn Models

This is an unusual model. I have only seen it in plastic before. It's Josef Jacobs DII before it was painted dark blue. I started with the engine and used a Q-tip shaft as the crankshaft to make the engine rotate

That is a pretty - well, Oberursel it must be, right? Looking forward to seeing the rest of the model grow. What is Hand Drawn models - sounds intriguing. - Leif

Yes, it's an Oberursel U2 Leif. The paper pushrods could be wire but it's pretty close. I laminated the firewalls together. Wrapped paper around the Q-tip crankshaft and checked that the engine rotates freely. installed the interior into the body and installed the landing gear.

Mounted the cowl and propeller. Mounted the cabane and the tail. The cabane was laminated with florist wire and the axle with a paper clip straightened and shortened. Comes out very strong.

I am installing the wings. I laminated the struts with wire and used a .75 mm wire through the body to hold up the lower wings then installed the upper wings. I then installed the struts between the wing cells. I use dark grey braided fishing line from BassPro to string the model. Thick super glue holds the line in place. I use a heat gun to shrink the line until tight then paint it with Aleene's to make it stay. This may seem excessive but my Grandsons like to play with them after I finish and I like them to last a week or so.

I think this one is finished. Came out very well. Now on to the Fiddlersgreen DH2. Got to have an enemy for my Grandchildren to fly against.
