OK, I think I figured this out.
In my previous tries, I glued the intake assembly to the rear top of the fuselage first. This time, I glued it to the bottom of the fuselage first, then to the top. Seems to work much better. I've screwed the fuselage up enough that I'll have to start over, but at least I think I know how to address the intakes.
