AEG G.IV 1/33 scale
HEY ALL,
I just recieved this in the mail yesterday and thought I would build this in between the down times with the crawler build. Sometimes it's good to take a break and work on something else also. The posting here might not happen as often as the crawler build but I do tend to finish a build once I start one. So the first thing I did with this kit was to go on google and find a Polish to English translator. The entire kit and instructions are in Polish and I could not find English translation at the GPM web site. The build instructions have large clear drawings and are easy enough to follow, but some small details and cautions are involved so I took some time and translated as best as I could. This is a large model but has only a small amount of parts 300 or so compaired to over 11,000 for the crawler. So this shouldn't take nearly as long to build or be as involved but we'll see. Anyway I really have no idea how long I'll spend working on this kit between the crawler sections but thought I would give it a go anyway. I'll post now and again, Thanks for looking! Photo #1, Is the cover of the kit. Photo #2, some basic cut outs of support bulkheads. Photo #3, This is how the instruction book looks, and my scribbles to translate. RichO 114/499 |

I've got one of these and would love to see a better builder than my own limited skills tackle it first.

I always thought this was the best-looking German WWI bomber.
Good luck on the build. It looks like you're off to a great start. Don |

HEY ALL,
Just a quick post today and a few comments and questions. So you may or may not know that the crawler kit that I am building is the very first card kit that Have ever attemted to build. The AEG G.IV in this thread is the very second kit I have attemted to build. The way Cyana designed the crawler kit is extreamly complex and the parts are microscopic small, but the kit is very straight forward. That is you cut out one part and glue it to the next part. With the AEG G.IV build I ran into trouble with the very first part that I cut out. I was thrown a curve ball instantly when I realized that the parts in the ABC/GPM kit are not actualy parts, but are template patterns. The parts are printed onto 199 grm/110 lb card stock and are not even close to the thickness that the instructions call for. I spent most of the day tracking down paper weights that are almost non existant. This kit is calling for card stock that is 1mm thick and some of the bulkheads are 3mm to 4mm thick. I ended up having to laminate severial layers of card stock to get to the proper thickness. I was just wondering if this is a normal kit experience or have I been totaly spoiled with the way the crawler kit was designed, or dose each publisher have its own method of kit construction? So now the AEG G.IV build, that started with 325 parts has just tripled in size due to the laminating process. Is it just GPM that designs thier kits this way or are most kits designed this way? There is no laminating in the crawler build and is this normal? Anyway the two photos are of the first 7 sets of bulkheads for the interior stableizing and for the most part will not be seen on the inside when finished, so I hope I did this correctly. Any thoughts along these lines would be helpfull. Thanks Guys for your help! |

normal
building up parts to different thickness seems to be normal for most kits
usually the parts are marked with a legend, like one star * or 2 stars ** to indicate the thickness |

KENTYLER,
Thanks for the heads up. I really had no idea that this was mormal, and also this kit assumes that you have worked with this type of build befor. I found that the instructions are incomplete. That is there are markings to do things but no instructions on what to do. I found myself having to go back and try to cut openings and slots after I had assembled the parts. So I had a nice long weekend to start this build and seem to have gotten far enough along to post more photos. Photo #1, Cut out parts of the bulkheads, dash, seats, and fuselage. Photo #2, Bulkheads and the outside fuselage with the lozenge como. Photo #3, Starting to assemble the fuselage and bulkheads. Photo #4, The fuselage all glued. Photo #5, The basic fuselage all sealed tight and clean. This part of the build was a two handed affare. I had to place the glue and then hold with both hands untill the glue set enoughfor me to let go and then go back and really reenforce all the contact points with more glue. With the laminating of the parts they were quite stiff and I wanted to be sure that all would stay in place. I reglued all the bulkheads to the skin interior and along any seams where any bending was needed. I also made sure that any laminating was not peeling apart and all stayed put. So thats where I'm at right now. This build is a hobby, in between the serious construction of the crawler. I recieved awaited materials, so off to the crawler lighting again. I'll post again in a while. Thanks for viewing. |

Looks like everything is on track. Perfect alignment, good clean work. And you are working through the obstacles and overcoming the unclear or incomplete instructions.
