Close, Don. That scheme was used in the Carolina Manoeuvres, Oct-Nov 1941. Source is probably from "Wings of Stars", The Aviation Workshop Publications Ltd, 2009. That source has (in addition to the Umpire scheme) a P-39 with large white crosses on upper right and lower left wings and ahead of the fuselage insignia. Also a P-39 red crosses on upper right and lower left wings as well as aft of the fuselage insignia; no doubt representing the opposing forces. There are also examples of other aircraft from the Carolina and Louisiana war games.
The book is a great source of "between the wars" USAAC aircraft, unfortunately long out of print.

I have two other books of The Aviation Workshop Publications that served me well before. Indeed unfortunate that they stopped printing.
I continue recoloring and adapting. Here some more Sea Furies and the Fury prototypes. Note that the latter two still need some designing. |
