Yes, it was "wrong time, wrong place" for this plane. Its factory was needed for more military planes. Douglas only completed 12 DC-5 :
- the DC-5 prototype that later became William Boeing's private plane before being impressed into the US Navy where it became the only R3D-3.
- 4 DC-5 for KLM that were destined for Europe but, due to the german invasion of the Netherlands, ended up in the Dutch West Indies (2) and Dutch East Indies (2 initially, then all 4) where 1 was captured by the japanese and 3 escaped to Australia. The USAAF redesignated these 3 as C-110 in 1944.
- 3 R3D-1 for the US Navy (the first one crashing on its first flight)
- 4 R3D-2 (with a cargo door) for the US Marines
