Aircraft of 343 Kōkūtai (Genda's Blade) often had the aircraft number painted into the middle of the Hinomaru. One example is the aircraft shown below, a Kawanishi N1K2-J of the 301st Hikōtai (Squadron) of 343 Ku at Matsuyama Air Field on 10 April 1945.
Genda Minoru, who established 343 Ku composed of the veteran fighter squadron commanders and equipped with the Shiden-KAI, had been an assistant naval attache' in London during the Battle of Britain, was the chief planning officer for the Pearl Harbor attack, and became the first commander of the Japan Air Self Defense Force after the war.
