In between studying Japanese (I passed my mid-term exam this morning), I am beginning to learn a bit about French military aviation in the early war period.
According to the sources available to me, BruNo 3157 is Potez 630 C3 Number 44 (C-556) of the 3rd Escadrille (formerly SPA 94) of Groupe de Chasse II/1, 1st Escadre, based at Etampes in 1939. It carries the Grim Reaper (la mort qui fauche) insignia of the escadrille formerly carried on Nieuport-Delage NiD.622s and Dewoitine D.500s of the unit. BruNo 3158 is Potez 631 No. 135 of Escadrille de Chasse de nuit (night fighter squadron) ECN I/13. It bears the white fuselage stripe applied during the Phony War to differentiate the Potez 63-series from Messerschmitt 110s. (Thanks to Jan Kytop for this information.) Dear Bruno:
Very nice, thank you very much for the profiles! Are you doing one with the red and yellow stripes? Dear Don: The references that you provided are excellent! I checked and indeed some Hurricanes confused and attacked one of the Potez confusing it for a Me-110. ps: Just for your info, Bruno did a few Potez 540 and 650 (in the No. 850s and No. 1455), some in Vichy markings some time ago, and including venerable 25 still in use overseas during WWII. |
