P-51 B/C Mustang "Little Ambassador" from Dave Winfield
Another model for another World War II pilot. This one is for Lt. James Empey.
From the Fighter Aces web site: In December 1943, Lieutenant Empry was sent to North Africa and was assigned to the 5th Fighter Group, 52nd Fighter Group in Corsica. Flying Spitfires at the time the group exchanged it Spits for North American P-51 Mustangs in March 1944. James Scored all five of his aerial victories in 30 days of combat. May 29th he destroyed a Me-109 west of Weiner Neustadt Germany and on June 11th he shot down two more Me-109s over Sofia Bulgaria. On June 13, 1944, Lt. James Empey of the 5th Fighter Squadron, 52nd Fighter Group was flying his P-51B named “Little Ambassador” east of Munich Germany in the 4th slot of Blue Flight. Empey spotted a JU-88 below him and dove to attack. Making continuous passes on the German aircraft, avoiding enemy tracers, Empey finally saw strikes on the JU-88’s engine and cockpit. The Mustang was never hit. Lt. Empey saw his fourth victory crash and burn. James made Ace on July 28th with the destruction of an Me-109 south west of Bucharest, Hungry. I know the D models were excellent aircraft, but I have a soft spot for the B/C versions, and the pilots that went into harm's way to take on the best the "enemy" had to offer.

I have often thought that the P-51 is too frequently modeled, and I did not think that a certain model of this plane would ever find its way to my shelf, I find it too familiar. Except for this... I will buy this, and likely build it! Excellent job!

I one time heard that a lot of Mustang pilots liked the B/C over the D. The D was a lot heavier so the B/C was easier to fly and turned a little better. Your cockpit looks great......Rich

Thank you very much, guys! I'm glad you like it so far.
Regarding the B/C vs D, yes, the D had great view and all, but as Grl. Gailer told me before, he was very pleased with his "Jeesil Peesil Mommy" B version, and had good scores on it. Quote:
More on the pony.... As I'm planning to have this ready by weekend, I needed to get up and turn off the TV... many times that screen (former "dumb box") chains you hard. All right, nose is done. Then aft fuselage gets ready. I liked this photo very much. Is like... ah, almost poetic (can't explain why)... Not only mine, but all the photos that depict such a display of a paper model. Ok, it didn't last long> I liked the additions to the B model, like this one> |
