P-51 D Mustang Ferocious Frankie - Paper-Replika
It was a surprise to see a Mustang on the paper-replika.com web site, when Michael Krol announce it on the forum.
So, being a Mustang fan I didn't wait longer to check it out. First I can say that the model desing is totally different from what I've been seeing with the Dave's Card Creations Mustangs (on sale in http://papermodelshop.com/), or Dr. Zarkov's famous Mustangs (on sale here: CADbest - Advanced Geometrical Solutions)... or many other designers, as a matter of fact. I think Julius wanted to create something out of the ordinary. A new challenge. So let's see... Here are the photos description. 1. Former parts glued to cereal boxes. I use 3M Spray Glue for this. 2. The Mustang parts printed in cardstock, about 180 gr, in laser printer. Photos 3, 4 and 5. Formers in place. There are markers where to put some parts, but not all. Need to be careful. Photos 6 and 7. Upper half of the nose in place. The nose has a cut which you have to close just by glueing the parts to the formers. Photo 8. Added the lower half of the nose and air intake. Air intake is not very well specified how to put it, so I just put it inside, per my previous encounters with Mustang models. Also, the strips worked very well and the part responded well to the glue. The problem here is that if you don't remove the strip on the upper half of the nose, the lower part will protrude and you won't have a smooth seam. I didn't. Photo 9, 10 and 11. Cockpit area and fuselage. In part # 10 I added a strip that was not in the kit. I did this in order to accept parts #26 & 27, and have a little more seamless union. (I hope! ) |

Interesting to follow - you know already that I'm curious about the Paper-replika Mustang, and the outcome of your build, and your comments, will mean a lot! - L.

Some other stuff interfered in my building process of this Mustang. But I´m back!!
Thank you for the words, Leif! I hope to see your Mustang soon, RunwayOneSixRight!! Photos 1 and 2. Ok, so for the next step I built the air intake scoop. I built it as a separate and complete piece, which after finished, I attached to the underside of the Mustang. Photos 3 and 4. In this part I used also extra strips to attach and glue the scoop. Photo 5. The wing internal structures seem very weak. You may add more to them with some reinforcements, but I didn´t as I want to build this model as it was originally designed (other than the extra strips, there are no additions). Photo 6. As I mentioned before, the wings are very straigthforward. Two halves for each wing glued together, with their own landing gear, and then insert the internal formers into the wing. The wing tips are added after the wing is securely glued. The tabs used to glue the leading edge of each wing must be painted to avoid the white line. Now, Julius designed the wings to be built together, like a complete body, as you can see in the photo; which is another different characteristic from the Winfield/Zarkov/Polish designers. BUT I have to use a cheat-addition: a strip of tamiya tape. You see, if you just glue together the wings as designed, there is the threat of them coming appart while putting them in the fuselage. There is no single structure that can help us to maintain both wings together, and glue alone is not warranted. So your modeler´s intuition is needed here. Photo 7 and 8. The wings are atached to the fuselge. I had to trim a little more on the fuselage for the wings to go all the way back. Photo 9. Tail. Another problematic area, because the horizontal stabilizers do not share a common structure, you have to be careful not to have the right stabilizer pointing up, and the left stabilizer pointing down. |

Great Looking Build so far. I will be watching this as I just downloaded this model to try myself. Hadn't thought of using cereal boxes for the formers.

Good morning, Gerardo:
The semi wings, are they stuck together, or you have to leave space between them? Best regards Albert

Thanks, Dco, Tom and Darren.
Yeah, the model is a challenge since is a non-standard design. Anyway, it getting there. Albert, the wings are "stuck" together. There is nothing in between them other than glue to get them together, that´s why I added a strip of Tamiya tape. |
