Luft 46 German project planes
Luft 46 German project planes
As part of my building pattern, I like to stay with a set of aircraft. Over the years, I have built a few sets of these planes such as Polish , Israeli, Swedish, Soviet, USA……….. However, I like to share here my German project aircraft from WW2 sometimes known as Luft 46 ( as if Germany would have survived another year ? ). My main interest is that those projects were prolific and wild. However, post WW2 almost every country that could afford to design aircraft had taken advantage of the information available and made their own. The USA and the Soviets certainly were big beneficiaries of this information as well as French, and British. Also, less known were the Swedes ( with the SAAB Tunnan ) and some less than capable countries that hosted ex German designers such as Argentina with the Pulqui 1 and 2 , Spain with the Hispano Saeta jet, as well as the Egyptian Helwan HA-300 and the Indian Hindustan Aeronautics HF-24 Marut. I am sure there are more….. My books For reference, I have these books. Great illustrations and speculation on finished look. I recently purchased 5 of them. Some of the projects really existed as ideas or sketches. Most were off the wall and more in the fantasy realm. Great reading material though. Also, there is tons of info on the web including modeling sites like Luft '46 - WWII German aircraft projects having data, art work and plastic model builds. My paper builds So far, I have built 12 models in paper at 1/33 scale BV-210 Daimler project F Dornier 335 ( actually built and flown in WW2 ) Lippisch P13a Me-163 ( actually built and flown in WW2 ) Me-262 ( actually built and flown in WW2 ) Me-263 Me- P1101 ( prototype built in WW2 ) Mistel 5 ( the Heinkel 162 on top did fly in WW2 ) Sombold So 344 Ta-183 picture of 5 aircraft from above My future builds I still have another Me-262 kit ( from GPM ) and most likely will start building the Me-329 shown here. Future work I probably will purchase a few more kits that are available in 1/33 scale and may also consider some of the downloadable designs. I did note that others on this forum like to design these German projects. I will probably consider building those if they have reasonable accuracy and cockpit detail. Pay it forward If anyone has a comprehensive listing of all available kits in 1/33 scale, please post them here. It will be a good reference for us all. Feel free to post your pictures of your German project planes. Thanks Isaac

awesome collection!
There are some more Luft'46 projects available, e.g.: - the Heinkel Lerche from Orlik - the Triebflügel from Modelik or Wolfgang Holzinger (via ecardmodels.com) - the Me 309 from NOBi can be easily scaled up - as well as the Gotha P.60 from Pavel Kohno, which is in 1/72 but is pretty well detailed for 1/72 ...

Great collection Isaac. Very nice, clean builds. Do you make your own canopies?

Very nice collection and nice builds. Someday I will take the time to do similar, I have most of those models myself. There's a Heinkel Lerche II model out there, as well as SPI's Blohm & Voss P.160 (build report at SPI Models Blohm & Voss P.170 Schnellbomber ). The Blohm & Voss P.179 in 1/48 scale is at 1/48 Blohm und Voss P.179 Paper Model

Great idea, Isaac...the SPI BV P.170 was my first ever paper model and it remains unfinished but still on the to-do and not the combustible list...I stalled on getting the cowlings nicely curved and then my twin grand-daughters (then aged about 2 1/2) used its box as a climbing aid resulting in some panel damage aka dents... This is a good starter model and I made it easier for myself by printing it onto A3, aiming for 1/32 but probably coming in closer to 1/35...if I do another, and I suspect that I will, the only changes I would be looking at to the design would be: - adding the pilot's cockpit and building in one for the nav/bombardier which is not in the model as designed but which seems from sketches to sir immediately forward of the cockpit; and - changing the designed of the gear bay doors so that they are all one piece i.e. so that they do not present a seam along the outer edge when open; I might also look at the design of the main gear as I don't think this simple design would work as depicted in the model and that the gear legs should be more like that of a Ju-88...

Intersting
This BV P 170 looks like an easy build. Three pods and a wing. However, it does need an interior for the cockpit. Also, the forward cabin for the P170.02 version ( not shown in this kit ) needs the clear glass and interior.
I would encourage you to build it. Thanks Isaac
