Vultee P-66 Vanguard

this is clearly a more "advanced" model than the H-1, although designed along much the same lines

the instructions are more detailed, transfers are included for the insignia (wonder if they'll still work) and generally it shows that the desinger was learning a lot as he went along

the panel detail is excellent, down to the screw heads

i left some extra on the edges, as the instructions recommend.. one bulkheaded needed it, the other did not... go figure

engine

so this time i thought i'd do a little more detail

i went to the art store the other day and found some hex plastic rod
cut off carefully it makes great bolts
the little paper strips are something you have to do if you're painting the parts, transfer detail that is printed on the parts as lines into something that will show up after its painted, so they are a kind of embossing

engine

sometimes i use fine copper wire to "emboss" lines
this looks like it will be a fine engine

Great work on detailing the engine. So far (in the 30 or so years that I have owned the kits) I have only got as far as building the spare test cowling, but seeing the fine work you are doing on this model, I really want to complete my own P-66.

level 2

here is some more
i built the H-1 at what i would consider level one, straight as printed

this one is "level two"
no changes in basic structure... but details added from doing research (which usually amounts to searching for images)

applied just a little "weathering"
the dummy cylinders
put a little extra bend at the edges to make the "stand out" better

now for the fun stuff

adding a wiring harness
used one of the kits "spare parts" (a good feature about these kits, lots of "spares" are provided
glued onto a piece of card
checking against the engine
gluing in the wiring... really don't like superglue fumes
ready to bend the wires to mount against the cylinders

thanks leif

the designer does have a nice eye
the last thing to add is a magneto or fuel pump that sits at the top of the front housing
i glued the wiring harness down with blobs of superglue at the ends of the wires... not to good
should have taken the time to drill little holes and just poke them thru the backing card
