Cool Mig-15 marathon

I have collected 5 kits of the Mig 15 along with the laser frames, canopies and wheels. All are Hobby Model kits:

Mig-15
Mig-15 bis ( red nose )
Mig-15UTI ( 2 seater trainer )
SBLim-2A ( license built polish Mig-15UTI )
CS-102 ( license built East German Mig-15UTI )

I decided to build them all at the same time ( or at least one after another ). So this will be a long marathon ( or madness ).

Pictures of the kits:

My plan is to start with the Mig-15 and then build the Mig-15bis ( which has some improvements to the kit of the first Mig-15. After that, I plan to build all 3 Mig-15UTI versions which are included in one printed kit .

These models were all built by others and have excellent build logs on the German and Polish sites. But no one built them all together.

What a way to start the year.

More info soon.

Wish me luck

Isaac

Always liked that plane, I have also got the HM MiG 15 in my pile.
Be good to see how you get on with these, as I am sure to need some tips.

Thumbs up A little background on this project

My interest in early jets:

I always found the early Migs to be interesting planes as they as well as all the allies after WW2 worked fast to implement the new technologies that the Germans developed.

I even designed a paper version back in the mid 1980’s on a CAD/CAM system. Kind of simple by today’s standards, but was enough for me to appreciate how difficult it is to design a good kit.

I also built many Soviet jets in plastic

Here is a picture of my almost 80 of them in 1/72 scale.

Aircraft background.

The Mig 15 draws its lines from the German TA-183 Huckbein with a major change being the placement of the wings in the mid fuselage instead of the shoulder ( like the Lavochkin La-15 ). The Soviets finally selected Mig over Lavochkin for their front line fighter .

I used the OKB Mikoyan book by Yefim Gordon as a reference.
Mig-15 marathon-dscf1309.jpgMig-15 marathon-dscf1310.jpg

The line sarted with the flight of the I-310 prototype in 1947 ( barely 2 years post the end of WW2 ) . The Mig 15 morphed into the two seater UTI as well as many derivatives and testbeds. It then got improved into the Mig-17 versions and that was the end of that line of design as the next Mig-19 only retained the nose intake layout.

The Migs were manufactured under license for many years in Poland, Czechoslovakia and China. All of the Warsaw pact members flew it as well as practically every non aligned country in the world.

my pictures of the actual aircraft.

I have seen Migs in many locations and museums. These are taken at the Kracow Poland aviation museum in 2009:

and in 2006 at the Oshkosh airshow:

More to come.

Isaac,

I built the original issue some time ago. The fit is good despite the external tanks. The ejection seat is nice detailled and I used a modified copy for my La-15 as well.

Have fun with the models; they are definitely worth a build!

Great!!

I noticed a few issues so far with the intake in the nose fitting inside and also the wing flaps bays need modifications. I am also not sure about the wing spars. The kit parts look weak.

Other than that, the kits look OK. And they are all very similar or identical.

I will start posting my building log soon.

Thanks for sharing.
