Cheers, Herky, after all these years, it's still a bit close to the bone...I think the best way to remember that aircraft is in all her majesty flying as she was intended...

I can still recall the pictures of the Erebus mountainside ........
And the looks behind the eyes of some of those I knew who had gone down to the ice for the recovery of the deceased.
A couple of those guys were my Embalming Tutors.
I don't think anyone in NZ at the time was not connected to that flight in some way.
Any one in NZ at that time knew someone on the aircraft, nearly on it, or part of the recovery team thereafter.
And the recovery team suffered as much grief as the families of those deceased.
Bless Them All: they did what few others will have to in life, and bore the price of it magnificently, as they do all these years later. My Profound Respects to them all.

Kind and Respectful Regards, Uyraell.

Herky, My Sincere Condolences.

My connections to that flight are many and varied, although not as close as yours.
In trying to avoid raising the unwelcome spectre of controversy, I'll say only this much:
Capt. Gordon Vette and his Crew were innocent victims of a company that had, in effect, ceased to care for its' personnel. As were the passengers on that flight.

I read repeatedly every authoritative book I could find in the years after.
From all that reading the conclusion I reached above is the most polite and least controversial I could state in public.

With My Deepest Respects to You Herky,

Kind and Respectful Regards, Uyraell.

I'm very sorry for you personal loss, I didn't know that this repaint meant so much to you.
