Halinski Wildcat 1:25 Scale

Time for something a bit more simple:

Always had a soft spot for the Grumman Wildcat. This Halinski kit seems quite simple compared to their later kits. All the detail is quite basic. That said It is very nicely printed.

First step is to find all the parts that need laminating onto 1mm card. Have started using Elmers spray mount instead of 3M. It's not as sticky but it is a lot cheaper.

The construction is straight forward. The fuselage is built up in sections using the 1mm card as formers for the skins to be wrapped around to form the various sections.

There is a small amount of interior detail to be added to these sections before glueing them up.

I find the main problem with building these parts up is not to dent any of the skins and keep my hands clean of glue.

More shortly

Tim

Tim,
Great choice of the model, but why unusuall 1:25 scale?
As far as denting of the skins, I would recommend reinforcing layer of card glued on the inside of the skin. It helps tremendously in 1/33 scale and might be invaluable in 1/25.

Looks like i'm off to a good start. Brain still working in 1:25 not 1:33rd scale.

Fuselage is mostly complete:

Keeping it in three sections for the moment.

As you can see there is only a basic representation of an engine.

Tim,

The fuselage looks very clean (no dents or glue marks). You're doing a great job.

Anyone who remembers (or has a copy of) Bill Northrop, Bill Hannan, Bill Warner, J.D. McHard, and I.E. Coleman's wondeerful collection of Model Builder plans, Flying Scale Models of World War II (Outerzone : Book : Flying Scale Models of WWII - Complete book online) will remember Harry Bagley's F4F with its mind-boggling (and apparently pretty accurate) undercarriage: Outerzone : Book : Flying Scale Models of WWII - Chapter 1

Maybe the images will help when you do the Hal u/c Tim.

I can picture the gang at the Grumman Iron Works when the rolled out the first XF4F saying, "Let's see what the model builders can do with this!"
