Two beautiful ideas here: The use of jigs, and the use of interior plastic rods, which can be withdrawn after shaping paper around them. This might be the beginning of something entirely new!

I can't get my head around the use of the styrene rod. What kind of plastic is this? Malleable, of course. And the paper with glue doesn't attach to it? And doesn't get deformed when you pull it out? Wonderful. Where do you get it; what dimensions - questions pile up in my mind.

I really want to learn how to do this, and I think it will be an important step forward for the hobby as a whole!

Warm regards, Leif

Leif,
The styrene plastic rod is so small in diameter, it flexes easily. I did not glue
the paper to the rod, only the closing seam. There are two, maybe three layers of
paper only. It is not very thick, but it is thick enough the glue does not go through.

Pulling the rod through the paper was very similar to pulling a plastic straw out of the paper wrapper that protects it.

Does this make sense?

Perfectly! Just wish I had a readily available source around the town where to get it. Will a railroad modeling shop do, you think? Where did you get yours?

Thanks for keeping the dialogue up with such speed. Unfortunately, I've got to leave for dinner & houseguests now...

No worries Leif, these can be found at most hobby shops. A model railroad shop should
have them. I believe this was by a company called Plastruct, many years ago.
But any thin, flexible plastic rod should work.

Leif, take a look at Plastrut home page:

Plastruct, Inc. - Home

If not available locally, there is always mail order! Jim

Leif,
Go to Hobbycenter and look for brand Evergreen - same stuff as Plastruct. If you want to browse the selection before hand go here. They might not have it all in Göteborg though. :-)

I apologize for butting in but am rather excited by this project and I have a suggestion on how to make paper rods.

I start out with the paper "sticks" that you find on lollipops. the smaller the diameter the better as the hole in the center is smaller. You can see them HERE and Michael's will have them in the candy making section. The one I am working with is from a Dum Dum lollipop, I believe in recycling. The first two photos are what you will need to make the rods. The wire is available in several sizes and you will find it very useful when making the wire parts for models. It is easy to bend and it keeps its shape. You can see my stockpile of these sticks in my drawer in the bottom left

Next photo shows the paper rod slit lengthwise and a couple of layers of paper unwound.

the next photo shows the finished diameter rod unrolled to size with the wire pushed down the center of the rod.

Last photo is the finished rod bent to shape. 1.11 mm (0.044 inch) diameter that works out to be 36 mm (1.45 inch) at 1/33 scale. Time to make 4 to 5 minutes

I just leave the wire in place'

No apologies necessary Jim. All good information, and the exchange of ideas is
a good enough reason to pop in and give me a fresh look at something that
may help later in the assembly. Thanks!
