1/72 Tempest (Zio Prudenzio)

I started building Zio's Hawker Tempest last week. It has challenged my skills nearly every step of the way, and although it's not done, I'm reasonably confident I'll be able to finish it, so I thought I'd post my progress to date. Zio's dramatic use of highlights and shadows makes for an eyecatching model, but as I've been reminded once again with this kit, he sometimes made mistakes.

I discovered the problems with the rear portion of the fuselage too late: one side has panel lines all the way to the end, the other side doesn't. Also, the placement of the rearmost vertical panel line isn't symetrical side to side. I caught a coloring problem with the vertical tail piece too, but I'll be able to repair that easily and reprint.

The Tempest had a flat wing center section with dihedral only at the outer half of each wing. This feature was captured well in the model. The double tab assembly method results in a flattened fuselage, so I had to pack it pretty tightly with tissue to get the right shape. I'm happy with the wing to fuselage joint. The integrated fairings mated up perfectly with the wing. The canopy needed trimming at the front to get it to sit down on the fuselage correctly. The 3 piece spinner is barely acceptable, not my best work.

Anyway, here's a few photos. The first 3 show the problem with the rear fuselage. The others show my progress so far.

Looks good, including the spinner. I am always glad to see how you deal with the little (sometimes not so little) errors with these models.

Has an interesting look before the radiator is installed.

Nice work Don!

Not all models of Zio, which are possible to assemble and get to the real point of the plane. I've had some frustrations with the P-40E and Me-109 aim to abandon these constructions. I plan to soon build the Ca-133 and SM-79, I hope to have luck on these.

I don't think I have them anymore, but I was able to build the 109 and the P-40 just fine.

The tail feathers went on fine, but I ran into trouble trying to mount that big ol' chin scoop. I'm going to have to try it again - tomorrow. It's too late and I'm too frustrated to try again right now.
