Beautiful

[QUOTE=Isaac;443043]I decided to make the wheels out of card stock . The center circle is a very thick ( 0.10 inches ) piece and the tire rings are 0.035 thick and I used two on either side. I used a circle cutter for this work ( caused a blister on my thumb from all the hand turning ) But I will survive!

Attachment 218621

The pieces were laminated and glued.
Attachment 218622

When dry, I turned and shaped the wheel on my mini lathe ( but you can use a drill ).

here are the sub assemblies
Attachment 218624

Tires are painted and dry fit to the plane. This is also where you adjust the axle angle ( canted inward ).

Smile Landing gear-final assembly

Suspension system

This aircraft used an old WW1 technique of wrapping rubber bungee chords around the landing gear wheel axle/shaft. For my model, I am using a sting ( from a manila envelope ) that I colored with a black Sharpie pen. I did not cover it all and wanted some of the red to show.

And finally, the wheels were glued on ( use CA glue for maximum strength ).

And lets not forget the tail skid. It is a simple wood stick sanded to shape

This is a major milestone for this project. next are the details.

That imitation of rubber shock absorbers look really good. Please remind, why you left them red? Ain't it should be black?

They are a mix of red and black. The only reason that I let the red show in some location is purely artistic. It is a nice shade of color.

When the model is complete, I may want to use some pastel colors and dry brush it in some location to make it look like it is weathered somewhat.

Congratulations Isaac with reaching this achievement. Interesting to see how you have made the wheels. Very well done given all the complications you had to overcome. Time for the homestretch now with respect to the final details?

Regards,
Erik

Smile Status to date

here is where the model progress is at.

There is a need to finish the detailing such as gun positions, windshield, wires, masts, generator....and add the ailerons back on.

Also, add the props and spinners.

Smile Engine exhaust manifolds

The kit provides you a decent rendition of the exhaust manifolds. However, it just did not look right. So I tried making it out of brass tubing. That was too much as it required fixturing for the individual stacks. I then tried plastic tubes, by they would not glue properly. So I went to something that I do well and that is to used wood pieces.

The assembly was basically the long collector pipe and the small exhaust stacks from the sides. However, since each is attached at a different angle and is different length, I assembled it on the model itself with little glue and then when I got the proper alignment, I bonded it with CA+ super glue.

Once those were dry, I added the paper extensions
Tupolev R-6 Modelik 1/33 scale-dscf2435.jpg

and pre-painted the 4 sub assemblies.
Tupolev R-6 Modelik 1/33 scale-dscf2436.jpg

Now glue it to the engines, add the rear exhaust outlets, add the metal straps and it is done.

They looked a bit fiddly to make
