Tupolev R-6 Modelik 1/33 scale
It's time for me to start building again. My last build was the Mig15 bis back in February before my relocation back to the USA.
I decided to take a break from the Migs and really of jets and go back in time. Looking thru my stash, I looked intently at the Modelik model of the Tupolev R-6. The kit is printed on a large A3 card and has lots of pages. I purchased the kit at a Warsaw hobby shop ( PAW ) located right opposite the Pawiak prison during a trip to Poland in 2009. I got lots of kits and the shop is full of completed paper and plastic models. And some pics inside the PAW hobby shop. A bit of a side trip info on the prison: Muzeum Niepodleg?o?ci w Warszawie Here is a picture I took: My family lived close to the prison in the 1930's and there is a not so pleasant connection to the place. ================================================== Some airplane history. Tupolev was a prolific designer and his bureau was cranking lots of designs from the 1920's thru today. At the end of WW1, there was a need for large "air cruisers" fighter like escorts and multi purpose aircraft. The Tupolev bureau assigned the ANT-7 designation and the military named it the R-6 when it flew in 1930. Tupolev ANT-7 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and here from the Tupolev site: http://www.tupolev.ru/en/aircrafts/ant-7_(r-6) I'm not sure why Modelik selected this relatively obscure aircraft to model, but anyhow, here it is. I tried to get more reference and I have found some in my book of the Tupolev design bureau. However, no details of the interior or close up of the external details. So that's the background. Building blog will commence soon. Isaac

Interesting aircraft, Isaac. Especially the gun "turret" at the aircraft's belly. I wouldn't like to have the honour to sit in there during battles.... Good luck with this project!

This is an excellent and formidable project, Isaac. I am eager to watch the construction.
That Polish hobby shop looks wonderful, and brings back memories of similar hobby shops that used to be fairly common in American cities in the 50s. Don |

I'm not sure it is a real turret below. It is more like a trash can ( or a dust bin ) with a cutout facing rear for the gunner and "trousers" to place his feet into. Also, it does not look like it rotates at all. So it is like a pill box that hangs below the plane. More useful for strafing what's behind and below. Isaac

A quick review of the kit
As stated before, this is a Modelik kit printed on A3 size paper. It is numbered Nr 7/06, so I guess it was published in 2006. The size of the pages is more common to Fly models, but due to the sheer size of the wings and fuselage parts, printing on large format is better.
The instructions are on two A3 pages with some details. However, there is so much going on that I'm sure some things will not be apparent or need better views. The printed skin tries to represent a corrugated metal construction. It is probably as good as it gets in paper. Errata When I laid out the pages, I noted 3 sets of wings in loose extra pages inserted into the booklet. I thought it was just a mistake and I got extra pages. However upon closer inspection, I noted why. The original kit was printed with two left wings. So Modelik published an errata set for the Right wing parts. However, they screwed up again when upon closer inspection of the red stars you can see that they were rotated instead of pointing forward. So they printed another set of errata wings and that is why you get extra pages. So if you have this kit, pay attention that you select the correct wing parts. The rest can be used for practice or scrap. An observation. The model is built more like a ship than an airplane. A long internal framing covered by external sheets. I'll bet that will be very difficult to keep straight and the skins match all around. More to come. Isaac

Framing
There are lots of parts to double on cardstock and then cut them out with precision. This kit could really use the laser cut frames. However, here it is the old fashion way.
Here are some of the main parts of the fuselage and wings. There is something funky about the wing center spar as it is sandwiched blindly. I will have it replaced with at least a plywood center to attach the outer wing frames. That's later. Normally, I do not mind cutting frames, but when the shape and fit of the model is so dependent on them, it makes that a stressful build. Isaac
