F4E Kurnass

Hi guys,

After the completion of the Prince of Wales I started on YOAVHOSMI's IAF F4E.
Yoav made his model available to us free. I thank him for that !

I did some research on this plane. The P4E '316' was a replacement for the losses in the Yom Kippur war and has later been upgraded to the Kurnass 2000 standard with a new number '716'. It was part of the 69 "Hammers" squadron.

This model shows Yoav's great design skills.
It is a joy to build; instructions are very detailed.

There are never enough Phantoms !

Started with the ejection seats because I love the black and yellow
In stead of the paper handles on top of the ejection seats I created them from motherboard isolated wire.

Klass,

The seats look great, I agree the black and yellow offset each other nicely. The pilot's offices are look very nice.

good start and very good job.

i also made the handles on top of the ejection seats from motherboard isolated wire.

and now a very importent suggestion for better result to you and to all friends that gonna build this F4E:
i am talking about the main fuselage, parts no' 8,9,10,11,12.
1. start with part no' 10 on the main fuselage.
2. attach to part 10 his 2 formers, front and back.
3. now we can continue with part 9 and then part 8 in the front and after that with part 11 and then part 12 at the back.
this way we can achieve an easy way to build and join these parts

a friend of mine that start with part 8 to part 12, have some little problem to joint the parts in good way.

this is my suggestion, take it or leave it.

take care

YOAV

since 2005 i build my paper airplane from the middle.
starting with the middle part (of the fuselage) that have 2 formers(front and back) and then go from there front and back to the other parts of the body.

it makes my work more easyer and i can check more easy if the body is straight and symmetrical on the length Axis.

Hi Klaas, good luck with your new project! I'll be following. This Phantom is a very good choice. Great aircraft and as a model more than just interesting to build (especially the air intakes and exhaust outlets).

I'm glad my WMV 1:50 scale Phantom still survives after almost 20 years on display. Good idea to use the Zeist Bouwplaten stand, but how are you going to use it?? There are two exhausts instead of one...

Gentlemen,
I have built the middle section as suggested.
I found it better workable to build part 10, cut openings in the formers so that I could more easily handle the formers.
The strengthening formers for the bottom are very helpful.

From part 10 I glued part to 10 first without the vertical formaer, so that I could reach the glueing lips from the inside and adjust the proper fitting of the part. After that I put the bottom former in followed by the vertical former. Same with the other section parts.

I choose to cut the openings for the missile tubes after the section was completed. It makes aligning easier, and leaves a straighter tube. Will do this for the front section as well.

For the placement of the needle for the Zeist Bouwplaten stand I had to puzzle a litte bit. Erik saw the problem immediately
I saw that there was room just above the arresting hook were the needle could be inserted in the centre of the plane. Tested it before glueing part 13 completely and it worked !
So I drilled a 2mm hole there, also in former 12. The openings I created in the other formers 9, 10 and 11 were large enough to accommodate the needle.

So far I'm happy with the result.

By the way: has the arresting hook ever been used in the IAF ?
