Smile Nakajima Kikka ( Kitstuka )

I decided to build the Nakajima Kikka kit that I purchased while in Japan a couple of years ago. The kit is published by the polish company Answer. As I understand it, it is a Marek design and is available as an electronic file as well.

I have built this model in plastic ( 1/72 scale ) as part of my early jet collection.

Also, last month, I was at the Smithsonian Udvar Hazy museum at the Washington Dulles airport and got to see the actual aircraft fuselage from afar.
That got me thinking of building this model.

This kit has been a subject of multiple builds. From all of them, it is obvious that there are many errors and areas of concern which I will try to learn from.

Here are the builds that I found so far ( I am sure there are others as well ):

Konradus:

Kartonbau:

Papermodelers:
Marek Marathon: Nakajima 'Kikka' 1/33

Zealot:
Answer Nakajima J8N1 Kikka | Zealot

This kit was covered quite extensively. My intent is purely to share my build, but will add very little to its improvements. So if you are good at repainting or addition more details, you can.

So this is the start.

Cheers

Isaac

Reference for the (中島 橘花 "Orange Blossom"?)

(中島 橘花 "Orange Blossom"?)

For those that need it, there is allot of reference material on the web:

Nakajima Kikka - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and

Nakajima Kikka*[Kitsuka] | Weapons and Warfare

Basically it is a semi reversed or mostly inspired engineering version of the German Me-262. A bit smaller since they used their own engines which were lower thrust.

Lots of history as to what happened, but nonetheless a great achievement. It managed to fly as Japan capitulated in 1945.

I do have my own reference books :

and a Japanese language reference of aircraft projects 1943-1945

Nice!

I'm eager to see the details on the engine. The intakes look interesting.

Frames

I also purchased a partial set of laser cut frames. Not sure why the rest of them are missing.

Nakajima Kikka ( Kitstuka )-dscf2740.jpg

However, from reading the other build reports, there is a serious issue in that the frames are too small. In any event, I will used them in a slightly alternate location as I will convert the sections from butt joining to using tabs.

Exclamation A little comparison

The Kikka is a somewhat smaller in appearance to the Me-262.

I built the Modelik Me-262 model years ago.

Here is what that model looks like in 1/33 scale.

Nakajima Kikka ( Kitstuka )-dscf2757.jpg

It is not really a good representation of that aircraft. I have the GPM kit and probably will build it next. However, I think the ultimate is the Halinski version.

I'll start posting the build soon.

Question

Anyone has a mold for a vacuform canopy for this kit? Or can make a couple of canopies for me?

Thanks

Isaac

Hello Isaac,

nice choice, it should be very thrilling to build a model of an aircraft you saw in your own eyes.

Talking about canopy, If you would sent me a scan of a model's general views (maybe from instruction sheet), I might help to prepare horizontal and vertical formers for mold. If it would be be useful?

Btw Me-262 looks good too.

You are very kind! However, that is too much. I was looking for someone that already built this kit and has the canopy mold so I can use it.

Thank you.
