Paper model to flying model...
Hi there,
Can`t seem to find the thread...there`s me losing the thread again ! But somewhere on here, somebody is converting card models to depron flying models... Well here`s my spin on this subject, I sometimes scratch build, other times repaint, other times just straightaway convert cardies to foamies... My way around things is print on to tissue paper (which is temporarily spray mounted to regular paper) Then cut out the tissue parts and permanently spray mount the parts to 2mm polystyrene wall foam Engines and fittings are usually standard paper modelling, bearings are tissue paper/PVA tubes, Struts can be Balsa, Card or Carbon fibre... Here`s some results... Oh by the way, my Martinsyde Elephant is still flying very well ! Pic 1,2 and 3 are an RAF FE8 pusher fighter, (Kampflieger), which i repainted and modded a bit (Cheers Roman) 20 inch wingspan radio control. 4 and 5 are a Airco DH4 Rubber powered model (My design) again 20 inch wingspan. And finally, direct from ecard models, the superb Pfalz DIIIa Matt77 repaint.. 16 inch wingspan rubber power... Cheers Batesyboy |

nice work ! i would like to see a step by step on the process, i like building lightweight free flight models.
do you use regular spray mount, or photo mount to attach the tissue ? i would have thought the solvent might be a problem with the foam. i should like to know how you deal with the wings especially. |

Those are fantastic builds. I too would love to see a step by step build of the flying model.

Cheers `Zak`
Just to let you know, pretty much the same artwork as used on these flying models has been resized to 1/144th scale for my wings of war (wings of glory) paper model collection. I have ordered a tablet/ mouse pen, to allow faster diagrams and instructional drawings.. I`ll do a tutorial once it arrives. Thanks Batesyboy |

I have been painting 1/72 figures for a French vs. Germans game in 1940. Also, building early war tanks and armored cars in paper for same game. Consequently, building 1/144 planes is on the back burner. I took my paper planes to a game convention on Nov. 1st. The advertised WOW/WOG game was not there but there was a game which had many papermodels on the table. |

Just as a preamble before the tutorial...
I don`t know what the protocols for mentioning trade names etc on here are, but i`m sure someone will correct me if i cross any lines... There are two different types of spray mount that i use. to temporarily attach the tissue to paper (go through the printer] is Remount (which has a green label) To permanently attach the tissue to foam, i use Photomount (red label) The commonly available spraymount (blue label) will not be strong enough to stick tissue to foam, but it`s too sticky to temporarily stick tissue to paper.. so the blue label stuff doesn`t really work for me. All foam to foam butt joints are UHU por (used as a contact adhesive, thinly coating both surfaces, allowing to dry before pressing together.) The tissue is wrapping tissue, it is thin and slightly glossy on one side...I buy this on a roll of 25 sheets from my local Matkins stationery shop. further details on the way soon...cheers for now |

These are really beautiful models. As a (currently non-practicing) stick-and-tissue flying model builder, I always enjoy seeing the interface between paper and flight.
Thanks much for the info on techniques. I look forward to more. And I look forward to seeing your future flying models, especially those lovely WWI birds. Don |
