Making the ADF Antenna
The Automatic Direction Finder was state of the art as far as electronics warfare went in the 1940's. It was a combination Direction Finder, Radio Receiver. The one on the B-17 was about 2.5-3 feet in length and mounted on the underside of the fuselage.
This piece is a scratch built part and is not too challenging. You'll need a cotton tipped Q-tip with a wooden or plastic handle. Using white glue, squeeze some of the glue onto your index finger and place the cotton tip into the glue that you just placed on your finger, and swirl it into the glue, spreading evenly and smoothly into the tip, slowly tapering off the cotton onto the wooden handle. Allow to dry well for several hours. After it's dry, take a black felt tipped pen and color the entire TIP of cotton so it is a good solid black. After it's dries, use an X-acto blade to shape and make a pointed, tapered tail on the antenna. Touch up with a black felt tip. Use the piece of antenna base, included with the kit to attach to the antenna and glue the base onto the underside of the fuselage just forward of the bomb bay doors. It might look a little rough, and textured, however at 1:48 scale, you don't see the bumps at all. If it is too rough for your taste, just put another layer of glue and sand until your happy with it. Just don't end up making it too big for 1:48! SFX |

Machine gun barrels
Tooth pick gun barrels
Find the thinnest tooth picks you can find, or if you prefer use the thinnest piece of Bass wood or Balsa that you can find. About .0.5-1.5 mm in diameter is perfect. Using a black felt tip pen, color about half the length of toothpick. Cut to about 20-25mm in length You'll need 13 of these barrels. I don't attach these barrels into their final location until all the turrets and other larger pieces are glued in place......... I used white glue, just a tiny amount to glue these barrels into place on the turrets and other locations on the aircraft. It's been a long 3 months to get here, I'd forgotten how tiring and time consuming these detailed threads can get. I hope that those that stuck with me to this point have learned at least one new thing about building card models. You probably realize that I've been building the model as I worked through this thread and it is almost finished. I'll leave you one image that I took of the finished model for now. I'll be be posting more over then next several days. Depends on my time.. Thanks for hanging on, I enjoyed the company. SFX/Swampfox aka AGSanchez
