Cool Heinkel 1078B Eric Son kit in 1/48 scale

Its time to add to the collection of small 1/48 scale Luft 46 aircraft I am building in my hotel room while on TDY in Montreal.

This one is another of Eric's fine 1/48 scale models.

I have looked at this one before and was reluctant to build it earlier due to the many small parts in this scale. However, I am coming to an end with available kits and decided to just do it.

Here is Eric's thread

More to come soon.

Exclamation Some background

Here is a little info on this aircraft.

Heinkel P.1078 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Actually there were 3 distinct variants that did not look the same. Our subject is the 1078B which has twin stub fuselages stuck to the wing. One housing the pilot and one of the main gears, while the other houses the nose gear and one of the main gears.

I actually like the conventional looking 1078A much better, but here is this version

The parts

Here arre the parts.

I like this paint scheme! Always nicer than the plain mono colored renditions.

Wing frame

Start with the wings.

Here are the frames parts.

I will not use the little pieces as they are too difficult for me to assemble and also, they get bent over easily with the card stock I used ( a bit too heavy ).

Once assembled. I added two pieces of wood coffee stirrers as spars to beef up the structure.

Eric

After cutting the wings, I noticed that one side is more on the blue side and the other is grey colored. All on the same page. Not sure why?

Smile Wing

The two center wing sections are joined and then glued to the center frame.

Then add the rest of the wings by wrapping around the fuselage.

Fit is OK and would be easier if printed on thinner sheets so they can warp easier

The only unusual effect is that the two outer wings have different shades. One is on the blueish side and the other is grayish.

Hmm... I'll check when I get home.
I was still learning/struggling with Inkscape at that time. I may have botched the colors a bit.

Engine pod

The engine pod is a partial construction that fits into the rear of the wing between the aft fillets.

Nothing complicated here.

pre fitting

and assembled to the wing

The opening on the engine sides are where the two side fuselages will fit against.

Hi Isaac,

I downloaded the PDF and opened it up on Inkscape to check the colors on the wings.
I used the eyedropper/color grabber to get the RGBA values. They all check out okay on both left and right wings.

Which color is having issues? Is it the underside gray? Or one of the top side camo gray?

Eric

It is the top of the wings. The lighter color. The center sections and the right wing is the same shade of blue. On the left wing it is gray.

I will try to photo it under natural lighting.
