Always an interesting plane. And yes, it is a Luft 46 development post WW2.
Unfortunately it was a pilot killer due to its low engine thrust and very high angle of attack requirement for take off and approach to an aircraft carrier. As captain Kirk said " Scotty, I need more power!!!!!! I think scaling it to 1/33 scale and adding a cocpit would be a great bonus. Yair, keep up the good work!!!!!! Isaac

The Zarkov's F7U-3M is in 1:72 scale . I built it some 17 years ago and while it was looking goof it is not as accurate as the Whilhelmshavener in 1:50 scale.
Also - the AIM 7 in the Zarkov's model is from version D or E which were used by the F-4 Phantom in the mid 60's while the Cutlass was retired in 1957 from navy service and only used the AIM 7 type one. |

Hi Issac - Thanks for your reply!. There is a cutlass of Hobby Model in 1:33 scale that was released in 1995 but is hard to find ( hobby model no. 33 ).
The Cutlass was in many ways a very innovative plane for his era and the shape was always looking cool but suffered from so many problems while in service that the navy didn't have any choice but to retire it early. During the 50's many types has the same fate of serving only for a limited period of time because of the rapid pace that newer types appeared. You have great models in your gallery !!! Yair |

I am aware of the Hobby Model kit in 1/33 scale. I even saw views of it, but it could use a repaint. I agree, it is a fascinating design. Isaac

the hobbymodel version was an exercise in frustration. the fuselage segments were mismatched, the tail fins seemed out of scale with the rest. it did have correct aim 7 early pencil point missiles, a cockpit and landing gear wheel wells. it was like several designers took a part and never conferred with the others. the paint job was awful. my Wilhelmshaven didn't have a cockpit, did yours come with one or is this kitbashed or scratch built.

Most of the Whilhelmshavener kits are from the early sixties to early seventies. The majurity of them are very accurate comparing with the Polish that dominates the market nowdays.
Some WH models as the Fiat G- 91 and F- 104 starfighter came with cockpits in the kits but are without wheel wells. It is amazing how the WH guys were able to get such good results without the 3D softwares that current design houses are using today ! Yair |
