Yak 28 Firebar vs IL -28 Beagle images
The two models are in scale of 1:48. The IL-28 is from the IAF magazine 56 that was released in 1961 with the addition of transparent cockpits for pilot bombardier and back gunner who operated two 23 mm guns. The Firebar is hobby model reduced to 1:48 from 1:33 scale.

Firebar vs Javin
The Yak 28 Firebar had the same mission of the Javlin -that of interceptor that can carry 4 AA missiles . Of course the Yak 28 was a 10 years later design but the basic mission remained the same despite much higher performance. The Firebar had a top speed of mach 1.95 and climb rate of 30000 feet which put it in a different and much modern class. In the Russian tradition it carried two IR and two Radar missiles. The only place that the Javlin had a chance against it was in low level where the speed difference was small.
The Firebar is Hobby model reduced to 1:48 scale . I attached here pics of the two. Yair |

Firebar vs Javlin images
The two are very different in appearance and the sleek and pointed nose of the Firebar is the opposite of the fat and wide Javlin !!!

Firebar vs Fishpot
Yak 28 vs SU-9 - two planes with the same mission that of intercepting intruders !!!
The huge area of USSR required special interceptors that worked with ground controlIers and their armament consisted only missiles . This arrangement was used in both planes which had simillar performance of mach 2.0 and 30K per min climb rate but the SU-9 was lighter and had a better maneuverability , better handling and turn rate. The Yak had a longer range radar guided missiles and a better fuel range. As it looks the Yak 28 which looks much bigger and formidable does not have a clear advantage uver the SU-9. Yair |

The irony of naming a fat and wide airplane after a long and skinny hand weapon.

YAK 28 FIREBAR vs F-8 CRUSADER
In The early 1960's one of the Soviet high ranking airforce commanders was asked which American fighter is the best - his answer was very quick - the Crusader !!!
The comparition between the two is easy . In a close dogfight the Crusader will eat the Yak alive as it had far better turn rate and far superior handling and guns which the Yak doesn't have. The Yak main advantage was the Radar guided missiles that he can fire from distanse even before the Crusader short range Radar will detect it. So as a missile carrier the Yak 28 had a big advantage over the Crusader that only carry Sidewinders. There is one exeption here the French aeronaval Crusaders were adapted to carry the Matra 530 missile which had both Radar and IR capability ! Yair |

As you know, the Soviet Yak 25,26,28 family were designed to intercept bombers. Never intended to be dog fighters. So losing a few Yaks were not really a concern. Also, Crusaders were not escorting bombers and would not pose a threat to the Yaks. Thank you for your great model comparisons.I love it. Isaac
