You are right Ray - it should be called "Firebar". Still some sources in the web used the name Firebear and I used it for the thread by mistake.

Thanks - Yair

Maybe this should be in the TBT category, not Aviation?

Yak 28 Firebar - The Russian Vautour

The Yak-28 Firebear was sometimes called the Russian Vautour.
The Yak had two engines under wing naceles as the Vautour and the main gear was located in the front and rear part of the fuselage in the same manner as the Vautour. But the Yak had
engines with after burners and had mach 1.8 top speed or almost two times faster.
The speed was important for the interceptor role as it enabled it to reach the intruding targets faster. But as a tactical bomber the higher speed is not a big advantage as bombing missions are mostly done in subsonic speeds and here the original Vautour design was more suitable as the Vautour had better flight range and could carry heavier bomb loads of 4500 kg
while the Yak could carry 3000 kg maximum load.
In short the Vautour was a better bomber while the Yak was a better interceptor.

Some pics of the two for comparison purpose.
The Vautour here is in the day attack version A . The interceptor version was called N and had two seats as the Yak 28 Firebear here.

Yak 28 Firebar vs Vautour SO 4050 images

The Yak 28 is much longer than the Vautour
with a long pointed radome to reduce drag.
In order to achieve the top speed of almost mach 2.0 the wing span is smaller and swept angle is higher .
The Yak 28 is from hobby model and the Vautour is from Yoav Hozmi both in 1:48 scale.

Yak- 28 Firebar vs F-4 Phantom

The two have a lot in common -
two big engines with after burners
Crew of two in tandem - pilot in front and navigator radar operator back
Top speed of mach 1.95 for Yak and 2.27 for Phantom. Climb of 40 k feet pee min for both.
The Yak take two IR and two Radar guided missiles the Phantom 4 IR missiles and 4 Radar missiles.
The handling and rurn rate of both was not something to write home because both are heavy 20 ton for the Yak and 25 for the Phantom.
The Yak was not delivered to any country outside of USSR but the Phantom was to many countries.
The Yak was retired in the mid 80s while the Phantom is still used by some countries and only late was retired in Japan.
Russian fighters were almost maintainance free and the Phantom required heavy one ...
As for the models the Yak is from Hobby model and Phantom from Academy of young ukraines builders . The scale is 1:48.

Yak -28 Firebar vs IL -28 Beagle

The IL-28 and YAK -28 are both from Russian origins of the 50's and 60's . . .
While the YAK 28 is at least 10 years newer then the IL 28 it served until the early 90's only in the USSR . The Yak performance are much better in terms of speed and climb rate - more than double the speed at mach 1.95 and 6 times better climb . The IL 28 proved to be highly successful and versatile aircraft and is still flying at some parts of the world such as China and North Korea some 65 years ! after getting into service.
The IL 28 was the most produced tactical bomber ever built and the production run exceeded 6500 !
