IAF Vautour. reconnaissance mission to remember
The Vautour with the glossy nose or B type that originally developed as a bomber was adapted to a reconnaissance missions by installing camera's.
In this version the navigator had an ejection seat be hind the glossy nose and below the pilot cockpit .There was an hatch that has to be removed in case of ejection. In August 1964 such a Vautor had a late night mission over El-maza airport in Damascus. While in hight of 2000 feet the crew counted migs that were parking on the runway below. The pilot counted 15 while the navigator only 7. In the same time transport plane was in approach to land and by mistake the tower controllers gave the Vautour landing permission. The Vautour land and the crew counted 15 migs than the pilot increased power and the Vautour took off into the dark sky. It took the Sirian some time and they started to shoot with AA ground fire. When the Vautour was at 20000 a srhapnell exploded close without causing damage. The Vautour continued with the mission and returened safely to base. Yair |

Vautour images IAF museum
My wife took out some old albums that were in storage.
I found some nice images of the Vautour circa 1998. In one image we can see the gun pack of 4×30mm that was fully detachable near the Vautour nose. The other image is showing the " Yabelet" pode which the Vautour carried in electronic counter measure missions. Vautour 70 was named " phantomas " because the elongated nose and was used as a test bed for various electronic systems. Yair |

Tne Vautour development - Kazoo France
The Vautour enter service with the Air forces of France and Israel at the same time.Still, some bugging issues with the Vautour had to be resolved.
One of the major issues was the lack of accuracy while strafing ground targets. The strafing results were poor for a fighter bomber like the Vautour. After some investigating the French Israeli group at Kazoo test center found that the problem comes from the gun sight that was vibrating too much. Then the Israeli group came with a simple but effective solution. Putting a 5 kg ballast made of reinforced lead below the sight eliminated the problem. The French group was very happy for that!!! Later in the six day war the Vautour proved it's deadly accuracy in many occasions . Yair |

Vautour as an ECM plane
The Vautour was a multi mission plane. In the photo version
he was the first to detect the SAM 2 in Egypt in 1963. At these years the electronic warfare was at the beginning and was not even close to the advanced ECM podes that anerican fighters used in Vietnam. The IAF as a response ro the SAM 2 threat decided to by from France a couple of ECM podes that were nick named "yabelt"in hebrew because they were big and cumbersome. The only plane that could fly it was the Vatour. As menchnend in the Vautour pages site during moked operation along the attacking Israeli fighters a dedicated Vautour was carried the yabelet pode to jam the Egyptian radars. Now 6 years later in Yom Kippur war there was a need to operate the yabelet again in the Syrian front. The Vautour was phased out of service in early 1972. In October 1973 the only plane who could carry the pode was the A-4 skyhawk. However the skyhawk with the small wings was unable to lift this system as high as the Vautour could and was struggling above 20000 feet. The Vautour could easily double this hight due to the higher lift of its wide wings. There was a joke among Vautour pilots at the time - " give me one hook under each wing and I will carry one skyhawk under each wing ". So in the case of the yabelet it was not so far from reality. In the image that I took below, yabelet pode can be seen near the Vautour in the IAF museum circa 1998. Yair |
