F-8 Crusader along Vietnam adversaries -mig 17 and mig 21
The Crusader main adversary in Vietnam was the mig 17 of which 16 were killed by Crusader
drivers. Only 3 mig 21 were killed by Crusaders. The Crusader had the best kill ratio against the migs 1:6 ! Two of the popular names were the "mig master" and "mig slayer". Yair |

F-8 Crusader in French aeronaval service
The French carrier fleet is small and is comprised of two carriers Puch and Clemensu.
The etendard IV was the main fighter of the french navy in the early sixties. For the task of naval air superiority there was no french fighter at this era. So, the french navy choose the F-8 Crusader after adding some changes that were required for the smaller french carriers. The French F-8 had an option for the matra 530 missile that was adapted for use with the american radar of the f-8 . The carrier of the french crusader was much longer than the american navy and lasted till the 2000's with many upgrades during this long period. This is a valid testimony for the sucessfull design that first flew back in 1955. Yair |

The Foch (R99) and the Clémenceau (R98) have since been replaced by the Charles De Gaulle (R91).
The Foch was sold to Brazil in 2000 and became NAe São Paulo (A12) while the Clémenceau was finally demolished in the UK in 2010.

It's interesting to see the Mig 17 and 21 next to the F-8, and be able to directly compare the three of them. By the way, your F-8 is a real looker, especially in that color scheme!

Thanks Yeti- thats exactly the reason why all the models that I build are 1:48 scale.
This way it is easy to put them close to each other and compare. Yair |

F-8 Crusader vs mig 21F
In 1965-66 the Vietnamese air force main fighter was the mig 17. While very nimble and maneuverable it was sub sonic and lacked speed.
Toward mid 1966 Russia supplied the mig 21F to Vietnam. The mig 21 was fast and his engine was not smoking as the Phantom J79 and was able to do dive attacks at mach 1.5 and launch the attol soviet replica of the Sidewinder at the american fighters. The F-8 Crusader was one of the few american fighters that could handle it along with the F-4 Phantom. Attached here some photos of the two rivals in 1:48 scale. Yair |

F-8 Crusader vs mig 21 F vs mig 17
The F-8 was credited with 18 kills in Vietnam. Out of these 15 were mig 17 and 3 mig 21.
Since the mig 17 was the main fighter of the NV most of the dogfights were against him Some photos of the 3 rivals in 1:48 scale. As can be seen the Crusader as usual with American fighters is much longer and heavier than both migs. Yair |
