F-8 Crusader and Super Etendard in French aeronaval service

The Crusader entered service with the French aeronaval in 1965 and served 40 years ! until
the retirement. The Super Etendard entered service in 1978 and served until few years ago.
Therefore the two had served many years together from the deck of the French aeronaval carriers. The Crusader served in the interception role while the SE served as an attack fighter.

The SE is fly model reduced to 1:48 scale . I havn"t decided yet about the weapon configuration and in general I like the models with minimal weaponary add ones as
It degrade the original clean lines of the models in my opinion.

That's a very fine collection of aircraft you have here Yair! I see you also have the Wilhelmshafener F104G. I built this model some 20 years ago, a nice kit to build, especially with the cockpit option, which displays quite a few details. And of course, interesting historical details you include with the pictures!

Best regards,
Erik

Thanks Erik !
In 1968 the Wilhelmshavener starfighter was published in Israel with the Jordanian air force
decals and scheme and it had a detailed cockpit which was ok for the time . The other model with cockpit of WHM was the Fiat G-91 which was published in the IAFM magazine with Italian airforce scheme in 1966. I build the two at the time but of course nothing survived. The oldest one in my current 50 paper models fleet is the IAFM mig 23 Flogger which is 24 as it was built back in 1992.

F-8U Crusader vs F-5D Skylancer

In the mid 1950's the US Navy had a contrcact for a supersonic fighter that will operate from carriers. The competition was between Vought and Douglas. Both companies had at the time two aircrafts in service - the F7U Cutlass and the F-4D Skyray. Both models were not considered successful as the Cutlass was plugged with many accidents and was very hard to maintain with the Skyray doing slightly better but had also it's share of problems.
Vought knew that this is the last chance they have to win the Navy confidence and acted accordingly. The Crusader first flight was in 1955 and the plane broke the sound barrier in that first flight !!! . Douglas Skylancer first flight was in 1956 but only 5 prototypes were built as the Navy decided to go with the Crusader. Later they were delivered to NASA and one was serving with Nil Armstrong - first man on the moon.
After a short period the Crusader entered Navy service with the F8u-1 version and the rest is histoy. Both equiped with the same J57 engine the Crusader could reach max. mach number of 1.7 vs 1.45 of the Skyray and the rate of climb was the same.
Attached are images of the two in 1:48 scale side by side.
