Folland Gnat 1:48
I've only just got into paper modelling through trying to stretch my skills on CAD. Here are some pictures of my first effort. It's a 1:48 Folland Gnat from the Gnat Display Team, XR538 of No 4 FTS. Behind it in the pictures you can see my initial prototype. I have done this model in all three of the Gnat Display Team colours, including the ill fated XS111, which I completed just before the crash. My condolences obviously go to all involved.
XR538 is the first one I've built as a second prototype to make sure all the panel lines line up, which they did But it did show up a couple of detailing issues that have now been corrected. When I build the other two versions I will take pictures and produce build instructions. I also plan to take some video of it in action when I find some time, on a still day, to fly it properly. It has had a couple of short test flights that went ok but I found I needs more distance and speed to stop it stalling. This was laser printed on standard 80gsm printer paper. |

Very impressive. I understand from your narrative that you designed the model as well as built it and that it is a flying model.
I am eager to see more as you continue to develop your own style of paper modeling. Don |

Thanks Don, yes it is a self design and build and as an aircraft I want it (and any other aircraft I design) to fly rather than be just static. As for seeing more of my work, I've got the bug now so I won't be stopping any time soon. Col

I am extremely interested in this project of yours... I love the Gnat and your design looks like it has a nice balance between simplicity and realism! Please post more of everything and most importantly keep designing.

Impressive, would thicker paper give the wings more aerodynamic form possibly?

What a different and fun approach to paper modelling! Following this with interest.
I know from my own experience with flying models airfoils aren't all that critical in small scales but straight, warp free flying surfaces are along with getting that balance point right which is a lot harder to find with swept wing types!
