Dear All ,

Around 1960 an american journalist visited Israely air force base with a host of course.
While they were close to a hangar he saw jets with big oval intakes in the nose.
He called his host and said "I didn't know that you have Super Sabres ". His host half
smiling answered " Yes these are super but super mysteres- our new supersonic fighter ".
Well, you couldn't blame much the journalist as the super mystere has a strong similarity
with the first american super sonic fighter the F-100 super sabre.
Even during the operational service years there was similarity as both started life as
interceptors and later as a ground support fighters.
In order to achive super sonic speed in a level flight each plane had an engine with an after burner.
The f-100 had J57 and the super mystere atar 101G.
F-100 was called " HUN " - short of 100 and the super mystere B 2 was called " sambad " - super mystere b douxe which is two in french.
While the f-100 served till 1977 with the american national guard the Sambad was sold by Israel in 1975 as the Israely S'aar converted version to honduras and served there until 1994.

Love your background stories Yair. They are invariably interesting and educational. I look forward to the next one. You also present very well done models to headline the stories. Thank you for showing your models in this way.

Thanks elliott- it is very nice to hear that you like my stories - thanks !
So far I only told a few ones and as you know each plane has it's stories.
In this way I hope that I am bringing more information and interest.

Historical compare f-100 vs SUPER MYSTERE

First we need to understand that while some 2200 SUPER SABRES were built from all types the SUPER MYSTERE was built in a much smaller scale -180 for the french and IAF.
The french firm Dassault was able to take the americans f-84 f-86 and f-100 and to create a very competitive french design that in some cases were even better than the american original.
The F-100 first flew in 1953 while the SUPER MYSTERE in 1955.
The F-100 had 4 models A , C, D and two seater F.
The SUPER MYSTERE had only the B2 while the B4 which had better speed and rate of climb never reached production ( mach 1.4 and 25000 feet per min initial climb).
The main combat of the F-100 was in south vietnam were he served as an flying artillery with napalm bombs , conventional bombs and 2.75 inch rockets beside the 4×20 mm guns.
In this role it was quite successfull. The north vietnam was left for the f-105 thud to deal with.
In the air to air only a one kill of mig 17 is credited to the f-100. The f-105 had 27 mig 17 kills
for instance.
Also , the f-100 landings were at high speed and dangerous ( in you tube there is a video that shows the "snake dance" problem during landings ).
Therfore many f-100 had fatal accidents.
The super mystere of the IAF service is full with combat activity.
At the first years until the arrival of the mirages it served as an interceptor.
Later it served as a fighter bomber and toward the end of the service was upgraded to
the S'AAR version and proved very successful in YOM KIPPOR war in 1973 .
In air to air battles the super mystere killd 3 mig 17 , two IL 14 transports planes and the greatest achivment of downing two Syrian mig 21.
Also, the S'AAR version was sold to Honduras where it was very popular by pilots.
It is important to remark that both served in the French air force but I didn't have enough
information about this combind service .

F-100c super sabre vs super mystre b 2

I attach here more photos of the super sabre and super mystre.
In terms of dimensions they are very close : the length is 14 meter + ,
while the F-100 wing span is wider by 1.2 meter and the tail slightly
higher . The super mystre tail is wider.
The wing is swept back at 45 degrees in both ( F-100 was called at the beginning sabre 45 for that reason ).
Rear section of the F-100 is made of titanium due to the higher temperatures
of the J57 engine afterburner.

super mystre vs mig 21 - six day war

The six day war started in June 5th 1967.
During 3 glorious hours the Egyptian air force was destroyed mostly on the ground.
After the Egyptian treat was removed Syria air bases were the next targets.
The super msytre squadron 105 was under the command of Yalo Shavit who organized
the big squadron lines just before the war started.
He was a leader on a mission to attack Siekal air base in north Syria.
The navigation was difficult hut they found it at last.
When the super mystre formation lowered they aimed at the runways and started the attack.
Then Yalo observed two mig 21in a position to attack the super mystres. The dogfight was
at low altitude above the base. In low hight the mig 21didn't have a real advantage over the super mystre .After a series of hard turns Yalo put the mig in the piper and fired , the mig slamed into the ground and exploded. His mate was sitting on the back of second mig 21 and
asked Yalo "I see the mig in the piper what to do? Yalo told him to press the trigger and shut,
then Yalo heard "his wing fall down".
That was a great achivement because until then the super mystres only had kills against mig 17 's. The mig 19 never had a clash with the super mystre but the mirages downed no less than 16 mig 19 's during the six days of the war.

F-100 in Vietnam war

The F-100 started the Vietnam war from the very beginning.
At first it was even served on a cap missions for the f-105 thuds
but was not successful at this type of mission and handed this mission
to the much more capable f-4 Phantom.
Also, when compared to the Thud it was not looking good either. The Thud
could carry twise the bomb load faster and farther than the Hun.
So , the f-105 was the main bomber over north Vietnam while the f-100
flew bombing missions over south Vietnam.
The f-100 served as a flying artillery over the jungles of south Vietnam carrying
napalm bombs, conventional bombs, rockets and also used the 4 20mm guns for strafing all kind of targets. It helped very much to the american ground
forces by bombing Vietcong targets in the jungles and flew more missions than
the B-17 flew over Europe in WW2 !
At a later stages of the rolling thunder ( 1965-1968 ) there was a need for reinforcement and national guards of f-100 squadrons came over from the US
to participate and help in south Vietnam.
The two seater f-100 f served at s certain point on a Wild Weasel missions against the SAM- 2 ground to air missiles but also here handwd this mission
to the F-105 f two seaters that were better equiped for this dangerous type of mission.
Over 250 F-100 were lost in Vietnam, but if we put into accost the number
of sorties performed by them then the rate of loose is not high.
Toward 1970 most of the f-100 were phased out of the war theater in favor of the f-4 phantoms.
As an interceptor the f-100 was not successful and only credited with 1
mig -17 kill - but the chance to meet a mig over south Vietnam was slim.
Included more f-100 and f-105 photos.
