NAVY FIGHTERS 1954 : Cougar , Fury , Cutlass 1:48

Dear All - the US naxy was undergoing a big change toward 1954 .
The second generation jets with swept wings was about to enter service.
The jets here are : Cougar F9F of Geli. 1: 48
F-86 f instead of Fury fj-2 1:48
Cutlass F7U-3M 1:48
These 3 new planes at the time represent the 1954 era after the Korea war and
the transition from straight wing to swept wing.
Later I will add more details about each one.

Thanks elliott - no I am not an aviation historian but this subject is my hobby for at least 40 years
including 5 years in Scottsdale AZ. While there I used to visit aircraft museums very opten.
Also ,I am an avid reader about aviation topics so I gained a lot of knowledge that way.

The background story about the 3 different planes started 5 years earlier.
The Fury was the devlopment of the standard f 86 E Sabre with the arrested hook
and stronger landing struts for carier operations.
The Cougar was a development of the straight wing Panter with a swept wings
and higher thrust engine.
The f7U-3 was derived from the f7U-1 and was a totally new design with many
design changes and bigger frame .
The J 34 engines of the f7u-1 were replaced by the J46 in the f7u-3.
All these planes made their maiden flights in late 1951 and were about to get
into navy service during 1954.

The Cougar was a natural continuing for the Panter. The Grumman designers used the same body while modifying the swept wings and tail surfaces.
The result was the dash 6 which was a fine fighter with modest performance
The Cougar had a relatively slow acceleration ,rate of climb and barely 0.9 mach top speed.
The dash 8. had larger wings and was only slightly better and both versions were phased
out from service at the late fifties as other newer types came into service.
There was also a photo reconnaissance version with an alongated nose for the camera's.
The only exception was the trainer version that stayed in service until 1974.

Hi Paperengineer - the Cougar production run was more than 1300 so it was a common sight
in naval aviation of the 50's. In Pensacola Florida there is also one f9f-8 in the navy museum.
The f-11f Tiger that replaced it also served short time with the navy but had long service with
the blue angels untilthe the late 60's.
The Tiger had a cool streamlined looking.
