By the looks of it there would be a very low wing loading, giving it a decent agility for it's day.

Hi Mike1158 - the wing loading was low therfore the cutlass had very good maneuverability .
In simulated. dogfights he could sit on the tail of most contemporaries. But if the engines were good as advertised it could have been a super cutlass !!! Yair |

F-7U Cutlass - Carriers landings
Dear All - In youtube there is a short movie describing the fatal results of ramp strike of
f7U-3 .The two J46 engines were derated by 40 percent and this effected the landings on the carrier deck .The cutlass was given the name" ensign killer" among many other carrier fighters of the time - Demon F-3h for instance. The front strout that looked very strong had a tendecy to collapse in hard landings and cause in some cases unnececary ejection of the pilot with fatal results. A technical change was made that the collapse will not eject the pilots. This was only one of the many issues that had to be ironed with the Cutlass. By the time most of the problems were resolved the navy started to phase it from service toward late 1956. Yair |
