Good work on this Stahlhart model.
To the best of my knowledge, the few F5Ds that were built were all used by NASA. Don |

F-5D Skylancer
Very nice sthalhart model.
I also build this model in 1:48 scale as this is my standard scale and I added a transparent cockpit insread of the blue one. Now the. F5D was a Douglas proposal for an improved Skyray.Only 4 were built and as Don menchnend they were transferred to NASA after the trials with them ended. The type had the same wings as the Skyray but much thinner for higher mach numbers. The body was alongated by 2 merters and 60 cm. Fuel capacity which was a big drawback of the Skyray was almost doubled and so the range. The Skylancer electronics was designed with transistors instead of vacum tubes and the same engine from a slightly higher thrust of 17000 lb gave top speed of mach 1.44 and climb rate of 25000 feet per minute. The NAVY preffered the F8U Crusader over the Skylancer and the type was handed to NASA and one of the F5D served as the personal plane of Nil Armstrong - the first man on the moon. Yair |
