Thank you very much, Mike and Don! Here she is mostly assembled, but still lacking the bombsight. The main gear are also removable and friction fit into place in a similar fashion to the bomb.

Fantastic work!
After working for Vought, I developed an interest in this beast, the monoplane that replaced the biplane as dive bomber. It is a shame that little is said about it's role in Pearl Harbor and Midway. Do you have plans to make your kit available for public use? Bob Neill |

Thanks a lot, gentlemen! Bob, I agree it's a shame the SB2U isn't as well-known.
I don't really have a kit, as it were. A lot of parts, especially smaller parts, were constructed on the fly and trimmed to fit in order to work faster, which for me still isn't that fast. I really appreciate your interest though, and may consider doing a kit as some future project. Okay, the next stop for this bird is the paint shop. Last edited by Yeti; 11-11-2015 at 06:40 AM. |

There are a lot of beautiful pre-war paint schemes for the Vindicator. However, after reading the account of these planes at Midway, I decided to go with VMSB-241 markings. The only images of those SB2U-3s at Midway come from John Ford's footage. It's interesting to note that there was quite a bit of variation in the markings of those aircraft. Some had large roundels, and others small roundels. Some had medical tape reinforcing the fabric on the empennage, others did not. Some had very faded paint jobs and others fresher-looking ones. As number 11 does not appear in Ford's film, this is my guess as to what it might have looked like, using ample artistic license. The paint itself is tempera mixed with PVA glue. If applied in the correct thickness, it won't create wrinkles, although I certainly managed to put a few on this plane. Anyway, here she is... Next up will be the flight. Right now I've got drizzle and a muddy field, so I probably won't get around to it until later next week. In the meantime, I have to adjust the CG further forward as it has changed after all the extra weight of the paint. |
