F-86 Sabre family - backgroud

The Storry of the f-86 begin at the end of WW2.
The Americans like the Russians and British each occupied parts of German . The west part was captured by the Americans while the east was captured by the Russians. The north was
captured by the Btits. Many german scientists were captured in the process. Some were taken by the Americans and Russians to a close centers were they could continue with there studies.
The F-86 was evolved as a straight wing design at the begining. Then in the North American
company a decision was made to use the German studies on the swept wing. It appeared that
by using the swept wing a big increase of speed can be achieved. The critical mach number
could be moved above 0.9 mach while with straight wings it was limited to 0.8 mach.
The swept angle was choosed to be 35 degrees.
The XP-86 first flew in 1947 and the rest is history.
Will be continued.

f-86 RAF paint scheme

The f-86 served 3 years with the RAF between 1953-56 as an interim fighter until the Hunter
came into service.
The model is from Ecardsmodels in 1:48 scale.

F-86 Sabre family - early stages

The prototype of the Sabre the XP-86 first flew in 1947. The engine was low power with 4000lb but even with this relatively under powered engine the Sabre had nice performance.
The development of the Sabre was uneventful as the design was conservative and straightforward. The J47 with 5200 lb was the engine that propelled the Sabre and the
world speed record of 670 mph or 1071 kph was established by the type. In 1949 the firsts F-86A was starting to get into service with the USAF.
As the history proved later the Sabre was the right plane at the time as it was proved at the end of 1950 or a year later.
The Sabre was armed with six 0.5 machine guns and carried two jetissonable fuel tanks in
two big pilons under the wings.
In 1948 the Sabre broke the speed of sound in a steep dive for the first time.
The relatively big wings gave it a good maneuverability in a close turns dogfight - something
that helped it to beat the mig-15 over the Korean sky's.
Both main and aft wings were slightly tilted upwards. The canopy was large with good visibility and the cockpit very roomy and comfortable.
The straightforward design helped to build it in big numbers and north american company
managers had a lot of reasons to smile !

F-86 Sabre family - the begining of the Korean war.

The Korean war started in 1950. The american used the B-29 bombers along with p80 shooting star's as a close support cap fighters. At the begining both types had a free hand
to do as the north Korean air force was based on Yak propeller driven figthers.
But toward the end of the year the game has changed. All of a sudden a silver planes with swept
back wings and superior speed emerged. The first american p80 was downd and the B-29
were now under severe attack as the new fighter that was called mig 15 had two 23 mm guns
and one 37 mm which proved very effective against the B-29's.
The Americans had no choice but to bring the F-86 A which was the best available plane in
the arsenal. The Sabres came dismounted by the sea and were put together.
Then came a day were a flight of r Sabres observed mig 15's below and one of the Sabres
took a deep dive and came closeto the mig while shooting very long bursts of fire. The mig
was hit badly and the american pilot named Bruse Hinton was the first of many american pilots who claimed mig 15 kill.
The Korean war will last 3 more years until the armistice took place in July 1953.
Will be cont8nued.

F-86 Sabre family - the rest of the Korean war.

The f-86A sabre and the mig-15 both started almost 3 years of confrontation from the end of
1950 till July 1953. The American claimed 860 vs 90 Sabres which is a 1:10 kill ratio . Of course the Soviets never admitted and claimed the opposite.
If we compare the 2 types in terms of sheer performances we get the following :
Sabre is faster in a dive and more stable above mach 0.9. The Sabre could turn better in the
horizontal plane and had a better endurance and electronic systems.

The mig 15 could climb faster , had better acceleration and had better guns.
The mig had higher operating ceiling and could avoid getting into a dogfight
at will.
In later stages of the war both sides put newer versions to the battle - the f-86 E and the
Mig 15 bis. Both had more powerful engines and eiectronic systems.
As we can see each plane had it's strong pointes in a way that a good pilot could take to his
advantage. Many american pilots were WW2 veteran's and had more experience and this factor was very crucial in korea.
As a consequence many american pilots become aces with more than 5 kills . The leader was McConnell with 16 kills and Jaberra with 15. McConnell died in a test flight of the new f-86 H a year later in 1953.
Will be continued.

F-86 D Sabre Dog photos

Some photos of the IAFM paper model of the F-86D which is derived
from wilhelmshavener original with the Ethiopian color scheme. A cockpit was added and the air intake was reworked with a real intake and the AB was modified.
