F-86 F and D and H models
The Sabres that fought in Korea were the A series at the begining and later came rhe F-86 E
with improved 6000 lb J47 engine. The F had larger span for higher service ceiling. The definitive american Sabre was the H model. The frame was deepened for more fuel and a new J73 engine with 8500 lb thrust was installed. The H had a better climb of 12000 per min. and 4 20mm guns. It could carry more weight externally. However the speed remained almost the same since the aerodynamics of the Sabre was allready exploited to the maximum. Because of the more power the acceleration was better. The Sabre Dog was almost new design. The radar was installed in a big radome up in the front and the intake was sitting below it . The tail horizontal surfaces were enlarged and an J47 with AB was installed . This engine gave 7500 lb thrust in AB and speed was increased by some margin to 0.94 mach from 0.88 before. Also the climb rate was now 12000 feet per min. The radar was not fully ready when the D went into service and there were delays. The armament was comprised from rockets in a special carry elevator that was mounted after the front landing gear and was lowered for a firing. The radar was firing the rockets automatically when the F-86D was in a killing range. Will be continued. Yair |
