F-105G Wild Weasel
This is a modification of Bruno's basic F105D just completed. Our friend Rata had nudged a spark of interest in making the 105G and with a lot of trial and error, mostly error, I managed to build one.
The wild weasel program was to modify an existing aircraft to carry out SAM suppression missions. The SAM was taking an alarming toll on attack aircraft so mods were made for anti radar jamming electronics as well as specially made missiles to home in on the SAM radars controlling them and blasting them to bits. The F100 "HUN" was an early attempt but it was reasoned if your suppressing these things to protect a thud attack why not use a modified thud to do the job. The F105F 2 seater was first used then specially converted 105fs were dedicated to the role, complete with built in electronic suites. The model fuselage was elongated 9mm a 2nd canopy/cockpit was designed as well as rudder mods electronic pods, etc were done. here is some pics of the fuselage/work in progress... |

A nod to Texman
originally I was a little worried about doing a shark mouth scheme as I first tried free handing drawing the mouth on the kit. I couldn't get the proportions right so I scrapped the idea and used a simple recolor scheme. Then Ray suggested I use a decal picture to place the design, then I thought of one as good. I took a internet drawing and scaled it up to the parts size and "lifted it" from drawing to part. I spent some time cleaning it up but the result came pretty fair. The rudder had to be changed but in for a penny sort of thing... Thanks Ray, Texman, now off to bed for a rest and finish the thing this weekend.

This is great. I suppose we all have to endure the learning curve when it comes to this sort of thing and I surprise myself with the tricks and shortcuts mostly gained by trial and error that I know now as opposed to when I started out. With Texman's advice you've jumped a LONG way ahead here.
But stand warned: I hope your resistance is strong because repainting is VERY addictive. But don't fight the urge too much 'cos I wanna see more of this sort of thing.

Very nice conversion. You must try out to find your gifts, then use them!

the weasel roject so far. the fuselage is coming along nicely. I had to re tweak the canopy so it sits a little higher and not completely straddling it. it looked a little low to me so this had to be done. in the end it took just a little nip and tuck aft of the rear canopy...

the second obvious difference from F105F to 105G, the countermeasure/jamming/'tronic warfare fairings. these contained all the stuff for the weasel to do its job. in the converted F model this stuff had to be carried on the hardpoints in pods, etc. on the model the are simply half tubes with rounded ends . placement is just outside the bombbay doors and forward as shown...

little doodads. I kinda like the dropped airbrake/exhaust nozzle being dropped down, here's a close up. also the aft stabilizer rootlets.
the next series shows the landing gear being built up from simple shapes, to ready to install... |

The final 3rd obvious F105G difference, the rudder. On the G, the rudder was taller and had a bit more cord, or fwd to aft width. Here she is installed and overall view. also the wings installed , things coming along nicely so far!

It is alive!
Finished the G, in between "apocalypse now redux" and "the Andromeda strain", the model showed signs of life! Here she is....
