Sukhoi SU- 9 hobby model 1:48
Dear All ,
The SU- 9 was a russian delta wing jet fighter and served between 1960 -1975 in the former USSR. The SU- 9 was much less known than the wide spread used MIG- 21 and was not exported to other soviet block countries besides former USSR. This hobby model was released a few years ago. I attach here images of the type in 1:48 scale. Yair |

I see that the missiles you put are not the original AA1 type.
Thats the reson why I left the pilons without missiles so far. Your original scale SU 9 looks very impressive ! Yair |

Sumhoi SU-9 -development and early stages.
The SU-9 and his brother the SU-7 were both foown back in 1956 and entered service
around 1960. The main fuselage of these two fighters is the same and the only modification was the swept wing vs delta in the SU-9. The lyolka Al-7 engine gave 9 ton or 19800 lb thrust in AB so tbe type could reach mach 1.8 easly and had initial climb rate of 27000 feet per minute. While the SU-7 was developed as a ground attack plane the SU-9 was developed to be an interceptor armed with 4 early beam riding AA-1 missiles. These missiles of the first generation were having very limited chance of hitting small maneuverable targets and were good against big targets like bombers. The high power of the AL-7 gave good performance but at the expense of high fuel consumption that limited the range especially when in AB . As with russian fighters a large scale prduction started. As oposed to the mig 21 and SU -7 which were exported to many countries the SU-9 served only in the former USSR. The pilots had a special g suite that was designed for high level flying which was standard with upcoming russian interceptors. The main problem of the SU-9 was the limited range- so a provision to carry two fuel tanks under the fuselage was made. The other shortcome was limited radar range for detection of targets but this was compensated by vectoring. to targets by ground controllers. Will continue. Yair |

SU-9 Fishpot vs SU-7 Fitter
The two cousins one nearby the other in 1:48 scale.
The main obvious difference between the two is the swept and delta wing. Here the SU-7 is IAFM model with the silver Egyptian air force scheme of the 1967 six day war. Later they were painted in camuflage scheme with desert colors for obvious reasons. Yair |

SU-9 Fishpot vs MIG 21 Fishbed
The SU-9 most close russian fighter is the mig 21.
However the two planes represent two different philosophies as the mig 21 is a light weight interceptor and the SU-9 is much heavier in its design. The two are looking very simillar when they are close to each other. Yair |
