Stalhart's Zenith CH801

New model: Stalhart's Zenith CH-801. I plan to build the complex engine for this model and all of the other complex parts so that this model really looks good. Here is the completed cabin:

Excellent start. I tried this model a couple of years ago, but never made it past the cockpit. I will try it again when I have the time available to do a good job. Please post photos and any problems you find. I look forward to your future posts.

I made the first two parts of the exterior plane:the fuselage shell and it's bottom. I think it is turning out nicely with the cabin installed, even though the fuselage shell doesn't quite match up with the bottom

I built the CH-801 kit a few years ago for an exhibitor at the Oshkosh air show -- "Medicine on the Move." They had acquired a CH-801 to use for delivering medical supplies and care to remote villages in Africa. They contacted me and asked me to build the model for their exhibit. The kit was a bit of a challenge but a nice display model.

The stand is wood base and a strip of stainless steel (K&S Products) from the hobby shop with a pair of ceramic magnets (Ace Hardware) glued inside the fuselage. It worked even better than I expected. I want to try it with a larger, heavier model, like one of Yoav's IDF jets. I expect I'll need a wider strip of steel and more magnets, but it should work. Those little ceramic buggers are really strong.

I fastened the steel strip to the base by layering two pieces of 1/16" basswood sheet to make a slot.

Excellent work so far on your CH-801, paperengineer.

As I have said elsewhere, your model is really beautiful, David, and I appreciate the info on the rare-earth magnet approach to placing models on stands. Aaron Murphy recommends this approach (with two magnets instead of a steel strip). I have bought a set of rare earth magnets and intend to try this method of mounting an airplane to a stand. Did you have any problems sliding the model off the steel strip?

No. The magnets are glued to the inside of the bottom of the fuselage and the model just sits on the steel strip. I could remove the plane easily by sliding it forward off the strip or a slight twist and lift. The magnets are strong but not strong enough to lift the base with the model. And a stiff wind would launch the airplane.
