MiG-21 / GPM / 1/33

As announced, the next plane will be GPM’s MiG-21, in Hungarian colors. The kit is very old and, well, not very good. It has only 223 parts (discounting the extra markings), which is very few, even for a relatively simple plane. FlyModel’s kit might be a better choice but, to my knowledge, it is out-of-print. So, GPM steps in with a very shiny paint…

Great looking kit. I look forward to following your build thread.

I tried that one, just a plain disaster Not a big fan of the paper it's printed on neither.
You have the new answer mig-21 kit too, thought about buying it.

What's sure, that 's a build to follow !

Hey Rick,

GPM has just brought out 3 new recolored versions of that plane.
The construction is really oldfashioned (Bulkhead), but with a Lasercut it woks.

For you Masterbuilder it won`nt be a problem

I just try the egypt version...

Thanks for the feedback, friends

@ dje – ooops! Well, the paper is thinner than usual at GPM. It is a “plus”, for my taste. However, the shiny paint is keen to show up any bump! You are right about the Answer kit. Being recent, it is probably better.

@ wanny – I did notice those new releases. As you say, they are recolored versions. On your kit, the paper has the usual thickness?
Regarding the bulkhead method, I intend to make some changes

Nothing better than the easier assemblies to start. So, there comes the external fuel tank…

@ Wanni - Hmmm, it is almost complete Yes, very thick paper...

The inner tubes of the rocket launchers were clearly pointing outwards! I tried to correct, them without much success. The marks on the silver painting clearly show that a hard fight occurred…

The wheels are rather "slim line". As usual, I used the rolled paper strip method.

The cockpit detail is extremely poor by today’s standards. I broadened the gluing tabs and added some others, to ease assembly.
Regarding the rear section, I added a bit of wire and card reinforcements for the horizontal stabilizer. The “bulkhead” construction method is bound to cause some bumps that would be readily betrayed by the silver paint. I added internal tabs and cut the formers “inside the line”, so that they fit without effort.
